Norman DeWayne Pope of Ogden, UT died April 20 in Ephraim, UT from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Norman was born October 7, 1925 in Park City, UT to George Hamilton Pope and Marvel Wheeler. He was the first of nine children followed by eight sisters. At age 76 he finally met and began a relationship with his half brother Cameron Pope, of Fresno, CA, who recently died. Norman married Helen Jeffs Nielson in the Salt Lake Temple in 1956. Helen died in 2007. He served four years in the South Pacific in the Navy during WWII, as Watertender 3rd Class aboard the aircraft carrier USS Cape Esperance. After returning from the Navy, he became an Arthur Murray dance instructor, obtained his pilots license, was a member of the Ogden ELKS lodge, and began his career as a railroader – retiring as a brakeman from the Ogden Yard, in 1984. He often reminisced about his horses, and operating “Norm’s Malt Shop” in Huntsville. After being injured in a railroad accident many years ago, he found a renewed relationship with God and subsequently held positions in the priesthood and served in Stake missions with his wife Helen. He found great joy in friends, family, music, dancing, singing, the great outdoors, and in telling stories…again and again and again. He is survived by three children, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, six sisters and good buddy Bob. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Leavitt’s Mortuary 836 36th Street, Ogden. Family and friends may call from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2010 and one hour prior to the services at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers please send donations to IHC Hospice 130 West Main Street, Mount Pleasant, UT 84647.
