Boukje “Bertha” Elzinga
On the cool spring morning of May 6, 2010, our family said a tender farewell to our Beppe. The word “Beppe” means grandma in the fresian language, but it means so very much more to her family and friends. Beppe means love, generosity, thoughtfulness, and affection. Beppe also means a great cook! We all have enjoyed her Kale and lasagna parties. Her baking abilities had no rival. The Christmas Eve parties and the goodies served will never be forgotten or equaled. Boukje Elzinga was born November 11, 1921 in Friesland, Holland to Meint and Aukje Kuipers. She married Martinus Elzinga on February 3rd, 1944. She immigrated to America in 1948. Bertha worked as a housekeeper for various local families who to this day still consider her and her family a part of their families. She was truly loved by the families she worked for. In fact, she worked until the age of 79 cleaning houses. She also took great care of her husband Martinus, believing in caring for him as a wife should. She was a fantastic babysitter for her four children. She was such an intergral part in the care of her great-grandson Michael. From his premature birth and colic to the present, playing cards, dominos, games and match box cars. Bertha is survived by her two children; a daughter, Alice Nelsen, and son, Mike (Annette) Elzinga. She leaves four adoring grandchildren and their spouses, Tina and Staci Burns, Michelle (Phil) Gray, and Cache (Erin) Elzinga. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Jase, Ty, Eric, and Rian Elzinga, Michael Campbell, and Mia Gray. Our family wishes to extend a heart-felt Thank You to Hospice for Utah, Whose entire staff helped our Beppe be comfortable and treated with dignity and respect. They were also a great source of comfort and strength for our family. A special “Thank You” to Debbie, Beppe’s aide, you are wonderful and we love you. Memorial service will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, May 10, 2010 at Leavitt’s Mortuary 836 36th St. Ogden, UT. Family and friends may call the mortuary one hour prior to services at the mortuary. Interment will take place at the Ben Lomond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice for Utah.
I am so sorry for your loss. I know your Beppe was a wonderful lady. I was at the train station in Ogden the day your family arrived from Holland. I was with my aunt Margaret DeVries. My deepest sympathy. Mitzi Goodman Jarvis
