Acel Leo Hales

Acel Leo Hales, 97, passed away in his home on Monday, May 17, 2010 after suffering a stroke. He was born August 12, 1912 in Junction, Utah to Acel Lenard and Sarah Edna Cooper Hales.

 

He attended schools in Ogden City and Weber County, graduating from Weber High School with honors where he also excelled in baseball, basketball and football. Acel later attended Weber College.

 

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, where he helped build roads in the Jackson Hole and Yellowstone areas. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring after 46 years. He was a High Priest in the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints.

 

Acel married Cora Strooy April 27, 1934 in the Salt Lake Temple. She preceded him in death on October 15, 1994.

 

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, genealogy research, square dancing and photography.

 

Acel is survived by his two children; Ronald L. Hales (Carol) of Phoenix, AZ., and Janet K. Doman (Kent) of Ogden, UT., 12 grandchildren, 33 great-great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, 1 brother and 2 sisters, twin grandsons and one granddaughter.

 

The family would like to thank Harrison Regent Staff and Burch Creek Hospice and all who gave such loving care.

 

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Leavitt’s Mortuary 836 36th St. Ogden, UT. Friends and family may call from 10:00 - 11:00 am prior to services at the mortuary.

 

Interment at Leavitt’s Aultorest Memorial Park.
