Olga Robaina

My chains are gone; I’ve been set free. My God, my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood His mercy reigns. Unending love, Amazing grace.

Olga Robaina, 86, died July 21, 2010, in the arms of her precious daughter after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was born March 7, 1924, in Las Villas, Cuba. She married Evelio Abreu in 1955 and they immigrated to the U.S. the same year. They lived in Manhattan, New York, until their divorce in 1960. Together they had their daughter, Eileen.

After the divorce, Olga moved to Miami, Florida, to raise her only child whom she loved with all her heart. The sun rose and set on her and she worked tirelessly to provide for her. She worked at D’Avila as a sewing machine operator manufacturing men’s shirts. She would often bring her daughter to work to impress upon her the importance of an education. One of her proudest days was when her daughter received her Bachelor’s degree.

Olga loved to sing and dance despite having no talent for either and we all enjoyed teasing her about it. She was a tiny woman just short of five feet tall but she had a huge capacity for compassion and love. She never spoke an ill word of anyone. Her favorite saying was “Leave the judging to God”. She truly lived the gospel every day of her life.

Olga became a U.S. citizen November 12, 1970. She lived a wholesome and clean life and daughter her daughter through her example. She had high morals and values, and was a hard-worker. Our country is blessed to have had her and will be a sadder place without her.

She was extremely proud of her family. She was always willing to hop on an airplane and come for a visit. During those visits, she would cook her family’s favorite meals and dote on her only two grandchildren despite being told to relax and enjoy her “vacation”. She absolutely beamed when she was with them and was tearful when the visit was over. Olga was able to travel to many placed her son-in-law was stationed. She enjoyed her travels to Germany, Belgium, New Mexico, Nebraska, Texas, Illinois, and finally Utah. She also enjoyed vacations in Maine, Massachusetts, Austria, and Switzerland with her family. However, despite all this traveling, she never learned to pack lightly!

She is survived by her daughter, Eileen Rise; her son-in-law, Peter Rice; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Saban-Rice, and Nathan Rice; and a great-grandson, Connor Saban-Rice. All reside in Hooper.

The family would like to thank Heritage Park Care Center, Comfort Care Hospice, and the many friends we made there, for their unending patience, compassion, and love they showed Olga and her family. We are ever so grateful to you and could never have made it through this process without your support. We love you all and will never forget you.
