I worked with Abe these past 11 months and got to know him on a personal level as well, outside of the job. He was good natured, easy going, and a big jokester. Whenever I was low on money, without me even asking, he would spot me until we got paid again. When he found out my girlfriend was flying in to visit, without hesitation, he invited us to stay at his apartment instead of a hotel. That was just the type of person he was. He was also a big prankster. I remember coming in one day and he had plastered a unflattering picture of me an ex girlfriend all over the office (i still don't know how he got that picture). I was finding those things for days lol. I found one of the pictures going through my desk the other day and it made me chuckle and think of all the good times that were had. I'll never forget those memories and the everlasting impression he made on me. My condolences to all his family and loved ones, we lost a truly special person and I lost my #1 Wingman, at least in this world. I take comfort knowing he is actually has wings now, still looking after me.Cheers to a great friend! Abe Vlaaderen!Jeff Hoy

We served together in Korea and Abe made a huge impact on me. He was one of the most loyal and fun to be with friends I've ever known. The year i spent in Korea was the best year of my life, and Abe was a major factor in that. He is missed so much and will be forever in my thoughts. I hope his sesame street shirt will still fit with the angel wings he's carrying now. My prayers go out to his family. i'm sorry for the loss of the amazing person we know as Abe.

I was a classmate and only knew SSgt Vlaanderen a week before his passing, but even a week will show he was a great guy and gave many a great memory to others.
