Barbara Jane (Zundel) Holmes

August 2, 1924 - September 1, 2014

Barbara was born August 2, 1924 in Plymouth, Utah. She was the oldest child of Eva Hess and Welling Zundel.

Barbara was a good and faithful servant of the Lord. She loved going to church and had a strong testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings such as Primary President, Stake Primary President, and Relief Society President (three times!), along with being a chorister, visiting teacher supervisor, and many others. She had the calling from her Bishop to do indexing on an old computer program before it was fashionable and easy. She attended the temple once a week for over 30 years. She loved going there with her friends and family. Barbara was all about service in her ward and community. She was a Pink Lady at the McKay Dee Hospital for 25 years and would faithfully go there every Tuesday up until she didn’t have the strength to walk in.

She married Jessop L. Holmes when she was young, and together they had seven children. Barbara always wanted a large family, and Dad told her to get them here fast if that was what she wanted. She took him for his word and had one of us about every 18 months, and arranged us to come boy, girl, boy, girl all the way down the line. One baby brother came five years after the sixth child as a surprise, and she was so glad to have him with her and to send all the rest of us to school. She kept us all close as we grew up and moved into our own lives by having a vacation altogether once a year and getting together for holidays. She taught us the importance of family.

Mom was an organized, cleaning machine. Our house was spotless all the time even with seven kids running around. Dad would say he would rather eat off the floor of her house than eat on the table of some other people’s houses. She taught all of us how to clean and how to finish a job we started. She taught us to be organized and to respect our home.
Mom had a fun 90th birthday party, but went quickly downhill from there. She kept telling us that Dad was coming for her any moment. She had truly missed him for 13 years, and we know there was a wonderful reunion when she passed quietly to the other side. It has been a pleasure for her children to care for her for the last year. She was able to stay in her home and die in the comfort of her bed surrounded by her family who loved her.

Her children are Chad (Carolyn) Holmes, Sue (Jim) West, Clark (Sharlene) Holmes, Jane (Brian) Henstra, Doug Holmes, Mary (Greg) Johnston, and Richard (Elisa) Holmes. She has three wonderful sisters who were her best friends: Nola Warner, Evelyn Zundel and JoAnn Passey. She has 27 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren, with 3 serving missions and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Donna Hunter, and two great-grandchildren.

We want to thank Visiting Angels, IHC Hospice, Sherrell Hart, Shantell Clark from Weber Human Services, son-in-law Greg Johnston, and Dr. Bentley McEntire for making her last days comfortable and peaceful.

You and your family members have my deepest sympathy for your loss. Please know that our heavenly father, Jehovah brings comfort to all who have fallen asleep in death with the hope of the resurrection. And how we look forward to the day when the last enemy, death, “is to be brought to nothing”!
