Donald Bateman

March 25, 1929 - September 11, 2017

Donald Lloyd Bateman, 88, of Ogden, Utah, passed away on September 11, 2017, after a brief illness.  Don was born on March 25, 1929, in Ogden, Utah to Delbert G. and Grace Hymas Bateman.  Don was the 3rd child and only boy of five children.

Don attended elementary and junior high in the Ogden area and Weber and Ogden High Schools.  He married Joyce Alice Nye on April 16, 1948.  Together they had five children in exactly 5 years.  On April 16, 1963, he took his family to the Logan LDS Temple to be sealed for time and all eternity.  He later became a member of the Harbor Christian Church of Ogden.

The family had a cabin for many years near Heber City where they would spend time together fishing, hiking, and playing cards.

Don was a hard worker and always had a job.  Beginning at the age of 11, he worked at Brown’s Ice Cream, at age 12 he worked for Clearfield Naval Base with fake ID, claiming he was 17, just to name a few.  In 1953, he began working for W. R. White Co. and retired 38 years later.  Many who worked with him said he was the strongest man they knew.  After his retirement, he began delivering meals for “Meals on Wheels” for approximately 10 years and then began driving for “The Ride” for another 5 years or so, both of these last two jobs were designed to help the elderly.  The decline of his eyesight forced him to quit driving at that time, but due to his fierce independence, he began looking for other means of transportation.  He eventually found the mother lode of all scooters and soon became a permanent fixture on the streets of Ogden City driving about in his fast and furious classy red scooter.

Don has lived a full and productive life and will be greatly missed by many.

He is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one sister, Audrey Faldalen; and two children, Sheri Layne Bateman and Donald Bruce Bateman.

He is survived by one son, Dan Bateman (Ann) Harrisville; two daughters Kathy (Jeff Bishop), Sandy, Suzanne (Kenny Welch), Bear River City; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; as well as three sisters, Lamae Garr, Marie Nye and Julia Bateman.
