IRENE DOROTHY SAKELIS OSMOND

April 6, 1927 - April 24, 2014

Roy-Irene D. Osmond, 87, left her worldly body and joined her husband and parents in Heaven on April 24, 2014. Irene passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was born April 6, 1927, in Buffalo, New York; the only child of Michael & Agnes Guzek Sakelis.

Irene grew up in Buffalo, attending school there. Her first job was for Remington Rand as a typist. She never let her disability slow her down; she was very eager to lean what she could. She belonged to a blind bowling league in Buffalo, New York, where she won numerous trophies and traveled to bowl in many tournaments.
Irene met her husband at a National Convention for the Blind. She married James D. Osmond on September 24, 1972, in Buffalo, New York. He died January 23, 1994. They moved to California where James was employed. Irene completed a course in Medical Transcription, and worked as a Medical Transcriber. Irene & Jim then moved to Ogden upon retiring.
Music was a big part of Irene’s life, Jim taught her to play the Melodica or (melody horn) and they both played in a Harmonica group at the Ogden Golden Hour Senior Center.
Irene sang in many groups in Ogden, the Senior Sing a long group for both the Golden Hours Center, and South Ogden Senior Center, Sweet Adeline’s, and the church choir. She is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Ogden.
She spent over 20 year volunteering at Weber Human Services in the Senior Companion Office, she has received numerous awards for her volunteer service, including an award for outstanding volunteer service from the governor. Natalie James supervisor for RSVP could not wait for Irene to come into the office she said, “Irene always brings a smile and the sun.” When asked why she spends so much time volunteering, Irene responded, “that she loves to help others.”
Irene was a member of the Ogden Association of the Blind in Ogden and held many offices on the board. As her health started to diminish do to Dementia & Alzheimer she had a hard time keeping things in order.
Irene & James were not blessed with children. Irene is survived by 2 Step Daughters, Kathleen Osmond and David Shon (Honolulu, Hawaii), Marilyn Bell (Ogden); one brother-in-law, Rex and Judy Osmond (Benson, Arizona); one sister–in-law, Leonia and Nic Valentine (Brigham City, Utah).
She was preceded in death by her husband James Osmond, and Both parents.

A special thanks to Irene’s Senior Companion, Bertha Golding from the RSVP Office. We would like to give a special thanks to IHC Herefordshire Clinic in Roy for their kind and loving care they showed to Irene, especially Dr. Brian Wintle and staff; and Intermountain Hospice and Home Health Care.

Condolences for IRENE DOROTHY SAKELIS OSMOND

Natalie James posted on 5/1/14

Irene was always a joy to be with. She had volunteered over 20 years in our Senior Companion office, which I looked forward to the days when she would come in. She was so positive and upbeat, would smile and bring the sunshine with her when she came in the office and was always ready to go to work. Thank you for all of the good times. I will miss you Irene. Love, Natalie
