Janet Marie Pugh

July 16, 1951 - December 23, 2015

Janet Pugh, 64, passed away December 23, 2015.  She was born July 16, 1951 to Eugene and Gloria DeMaio in Pittsburgh, PA.  Janet graduated from Weber State for her B.A. and the University of Utah for M.A.   She married Thomas Pugh in Honolulu, HI on October 25, 1980.

Janet’s life was dedicated to serving others.  She went back to college with four young daughters to receive her Master’s degree in Social Work.

Jan came from a lively Italian family “back east” where she learned to sing and laugh the loudest.

She worked tirelessly for her family, setting an example of a strong, graceful, and brave woman for all that she encountered.

She loved cooking, dancing, and camping with the love of her life, Thomas Pugh, and their family.

Not only was she compassionate, but she was also an adventurer.  Many of the pictures of her are of her hiking through the desert (despite a fear of snakes), camping in her trailer in some forest, or off to wherever her family asked her to go.  She never said no.  Not just because she loved her family, but also because she leaned into life.  The hard times and the fun times.  She was one brave woman.  Whether it was moving across the country as a single mother to marry a man she only knew for a few weeks, or driving with me when I packed up moy car and moved to Seattle (and daring to leave me there when she saw my first apartment on Capitol Hill ten years on half way house row).  The woman was made of steel.  And she knew a good life included reliable luggage and a strong constitution.

No one left her house without a plate of food and a kiss on the cheek.

Janet is survived by Thomas Pugh, Teri Olson and family, Melanie Pugh, Rebecca Shelton  and family, Candice Pugh Adams and family; as well as her mother Gloria; siblings Yvonne, Carol, Richard, Tony; grandchildren Noah Olson, Wyatt and Bryn Lee Shelton, and Zeek and Adele Ivory Adams.

Janet is preceded in death by her father Eugene and sister Linda.

Tom, I only just found out today about my good friend, Jan. I am truly heartbroken. Although we did not see each other much after I moved away, Jan was a very good neighbor and a dear friend to me. She was so loving and our conversations never ended without a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek. I love her dearly and I am so sad to have to say goodbye. I am so sorry for your loss. I am sending my love, thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Much love to you all, Tammy

Teri and family, I happened to see that Janet had passed away from the Leavitt's sign on 36th. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope your family will have peace at this difficult time. Sending my love and thinking of the few times I met your mom when we were in high school. I was just telling my daughter how my friend's mom (Janet) liked to put lipstick on before bed to look good for her husband! I thought that was awesome! She sounded like a wonderful woman. Love, Kristen (James) Peer

Dear Pugh Family, We are deeply saddened at the passing of Jan. She welcomed us into the family when Tyson and Becky got engaged. She let us know we were part of the family now. She was a loving and special person. We always felt her love and friendship. After meeting Jan we knew where Becky learned all her compassion, love and grace. She was a wonderful grandmother to Wyatt and Brynlee. She loved all her grandchildren very much and showed it to them in many ways. She was a great example to all. The world is a darker place without her. All our love to the family during this difficult time and hereafter.

To the family of dear Janet, please accept my/our prayers and condolences for dear Janet. I am a Sister of St. Benedict who was in Ogden for 40 years - and with Janet being a good oblate, I knew her well. She was such a loyal and dedicated oblate and I know she will be missed. I was so sorry to hear of her death - but I want the family to know that you have our prayers for the repose of her soul and the assurance that we will continue the prayers for all of you. God bless you all and give you peace and strength, knowing that Janet is at rest with God. Sister Luke

My deepest sympathy to Tom and family for the loss of a truly remarkable woman. I worked with Jan at Davis Hospital. I will miss her kind, caring and thoughtful way. She brought a special light and understanding to everyone that she met. She always had time for you and made you feel very special. Jan would bring dinner to my father and mother at the Assisted Living which meant the world to them. Jan always had time for someone in need. "Jan, I will miss you dearly."

My heart is broken knowing this loving, beautiful, graceful, fun, understanding women full of zest & style is suddenly gone. She always treated me with love and kindness as if I were one of her own. She fed me and loved me and picked me up from the police sation a time or two, yet still loved me. I will miss her dearly and I will hold dear the precious memories I have and love she showed me. I'll never forget her peach pie and her laugh .... I know she put some gold in all people she loved and I hope we can keep it close and shine it forward ♡♡♡♡♡

Unfortunately, I did not know Janet personally. I do, however, know her daughter, Rebecca Shelton. Becky's love for her mother was evident and powerful. Becky has told me that her mother and I would like each other. I sense that the world has lost a bright star and I send love and light to Janet's family in this difficult time.
