LaVon T. VanOrden

October 22, 1937 - February 8, 2015

LaVon T. VanOrden, 77, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2015 at his home in Pleasant View, Utah.  He was born October 22, 1937 to Don Merrill and Irvene Thompson VanOrden in Logan, Utah.  Von grew up in the Ogden area and graduated from Ogden High in 1955.  He married Emma Jean Burge in Brigham City, Utah on June 25, 1960 and they were sealed for time and eternity in the Bountiful, Utah temple on January 20, 1998.

Von worked at Hill Air Force Base where he was responsible for the building and maintenance of physiological trainers for pilots around the world.  He retired from Hill AFB in 1994.   Von loved to work with his hands, and following his retirement, he designed and built a beautiful home in Liberty, Utah. While living in Liberty, he went to work for a contractor scheduling maintenance on F-16 fighter wings.  After almost twenty beautiful years in Liberty, Von and Jean moved to Pleasant View.

Von was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He attended and had many dear friends in the North Fork Ward in Liberty, as well as the Pleasant View 10th Ward.  He considered his greatest accomplishments to be his family, winning the love of his “sweetheart”, Emma Jean, and finally adding a cherry on their cake, by giving his sweetheart a wonderful baby girl.  Another of his joys was riding his Harley and going on bike rides with his sons and his friends.  He loved going to the gym and watching his grandchildren’s many sporting events.  He was a quiet giant who had a way about him that made each member of his family and every person that he met feel loved and important.

Von is survived by his wife Jean, son Chet (Janice) VanOrden, son Scott (Stacy) VanOrden, son Lance VanOrden and daughter Tiffany (Adam) Trump.  He is also survived by his sister Carol (Jerry) Weaver, brother Cleve (Kaye) VanOrden and sister Daun Marie (Oliver) Larson.  He was grandpa to 14 and great grandpa to six, plus two more on the way that he will visit with prior to their arrival.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 13th, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pleasant View 10th Ward building, 3602 North 500 West, Pleasant View, Utah.  A viewing will be held for friends and family prior to the funeral from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Jean, I wish I had been able to be at the funeral today. I'm so sorry Von had to leave so soon. He was a wonderful man, kind and caring with everyone. It has been a pleasure getting to know both of you over the years. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Jean, Words escape me when it comes to expressing the sadness I feel upon hearing of Von's death. In my mind's eye I see him polishing that boat he was so proud of in the 70's. Or I see him working on that fireplace in the North Ogden house, or working in the garden, or sitting quietly working on some project at the table. He was always busy, but never in a hurry. I smiled remembering when you finally had a girl. I know how deep and solid of a love you shared. I know how much his family meant to him. Few men have measured up to Von when it comes to being a kind and giving husband and father. We all were blessed to know him. My love is sent to you all. God bless you. Sally (Christiansen) Wessely

Jean, We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Vons passing. Our heart hurts for you and your family. We know how much you loved and respected him. You both were an example of pure love to all. How we've missed you since you've moved from the valley and sitting with you in the old people's section at church and having our weekly talks. There's also been such a big gap missing in our temple group when you moved from the ward. It was a wonderful night when we went out to dinner with you both, after the temple, and got to know you better. We didn't know Von could talk so much! We always saw such a quiet side of him, but it was fun getting to know you better. You have always been a special friend and one to be admired. I've never known a more caring person in my life, with all sincerity. You both have been a joy to know and have put an extra light in our lives. May you always know of our love for you both and pray that you will truly believe that it isn't the end of his life, but the beginning. We love you, Kalyn and Shelley Liston
