Lorna Beck

January 24, 1922 - January 23, 2018

Lorna Beck declared that 96 was too old, and so she died at the young age of 95, one day before her birthday. Always determined to do it her way, she passed from this life peacefully in her sleep.

She was born in Georgetown, Idaho to Homer K. and Percie Tippetts Clark. Always a learner and an avid student, she graduated from Fielding High School, attended Utah State and LDS Business College. World War II interrupted her formal education. She worked during the war for the Army Corps of Engineers (instead of joining the WAVES). She loved working, and when her children were old enough to pretty much fend for themselves she began her career at the Weber County Library, giving her access to “all the books!” until she retired in 2001 after 31 years. Her children thank her for turning them into obsessive readers and thinkers.

The end of the war brought the love of her life back to her. She married Veriel Beck in Ogden, Utah on November 3, 1945. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS temple. Together they raised three children, who again thank them both for providing a loving home and an example of lifelong affection, respect and stability. They golfed, waterskied, played bridge and entertained family and friends. When he died in 2005, she missed him terribly, but her innate strength and spirit kept her going. Even when her health began to fail, her determination to stand on her own and laugh at herself maintained her dignity and purpose.

She was active in the LDS church, bringing her enthusiasm and zeal to many organizations and positions. She was always dependable and loved to serve, and she could out-crochet the best of them. Her spiritual life brought her joy and comfort throughout her long life’s journey.

Lorna is survived by her daughter Anne Beck (Joseph Gillon); her son Steven Beck (Wendy); six grandsons and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Veriel Beck, and her son, Clark David Beck, both in 2005; her parents; her sisters LaRue Beck, Emma Fae Farr, Geraldine Rose; her son-in-law Joseph Gillon.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 29, 2018, at Leavitt’s Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah. She will now rest beside her beloved husband and best friend forever.
