Mary Leavitt Austad

November 29, 1916 - July 6, 2013

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Mary Leavitt Austad, 96, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, July 6, 2013. She was born November 29, 1916, to LeRoy Leavitt and Ella Linderman in Ogden, Utah. Mary graduated from Ogden High School. She married Norman William Austad in the Logan Temple July 12, 1939.

Mary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served in numerous callings. She had a fervent faith in and love for the Lord Jesus Christ and found joy attending the temple. Mary worked for the Internal Revenue Service as a tax examiner and retired after 20 years.

Mary loved people. She had a special pride and love for her dear husband and children, their spouses and their children. She took pride in her Leavitt heritage and always took special interest in her extended family. She was happiest when she was with family. Mary had a great gift and love of music. She could play anything on the piano or organ by ear. As a young girl working at the Egyptian Theater she would return to her home and delight family and friends with her own rendition of the latest movie scores. Mary loved her neighbors and friends who on birthdays or other special occasions were recipients of bouquets of lilacs, banana bread or other tasty treats. She had a special love for everyone and was greatly loved in return.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, parents, three brothers and four sisters. She is survived by a sister, Lois Brown, and brother, Thomas Leavitt. She is also survived by three sons and a daughter; Larry Norman (Candy) Austad, David William (Janice) Austad, Thomas Roy(Shawnee) Austad, and Sharon (Tony) Bagley; and 24 grandchildren, 98 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the Leavitt’s Aultorest Mortuary from 6 to 8 P.M. The funeral will be held on Friday, July 12, at the Riverdale 5th Ward, 4000 Parker Dr, at 11:00 A.M. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10 to 10:45 A.M. Interment will be at Leavitt’s Memorial Park.

The family wishes to express our thanks to Intermountain Hospice for their service and kindness. A special thanks to Mom’s nurse Heidi, and to Camille for their amazing care and to Dr. Brian Campbell and Dr. John Wood. We also wish to thank Comfort Keepers for their compassionate support and love.

Dear Dave and Janice, I did not hear of the passing of your dear Mother until yesterday. I'm so sorry to hear about her leaving this earth. I would have been there in a heart beat had I known. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Much love, Julie

My condolences to all of the Austad family. I remember growing up in the 40th Ward and having many singing experiences in the choir and other events with Mary. She had such a beautiful voice. That was so many years ago, but the memories of Mary and all of the Austad family remind me of wonderful times of my youth. I hope you will be comforted in your loss..

What a huge influence for good your mother was, Tom! Mary mentored me at age 10, when I was called to be the Junior Sunday School pianist. It was a shaky beginning that has brought great things and I will forever adore that patient, kindly woman! I think everyone loved to hear Mary sing. Please, accept my most sincere condolance at your dear mother's passing, Tom and Shawnee. You are on my heart and in my prayers.
