Melba Hazen

October 6, 1927 - October 12, 2011

On October 12, 2011, the family and friends of Melba Charlesworth Hazen grieved her loss. Melba passed away just before midnight at home after a hard fought and courageous battle with cancer at the age of eighty-four. She was born on October 6th, 1927 to Ambrose S Charlesworth and Frances Cora Adams at the family home on Wilson Lane in Ogden, the sixth daughter in a family of eight children. She graduated from Ogden High School where she met and began dating Frank Hazen, the BMOC, as a sophomore. Their romance continued after she graduated and they attended Weber College together. They were married in the Salt Lake City temple on June 17, 1946, sealed by Joseph Fielding Smith. They lived in Logan while Frank completed his schooling at Utah State University, playing basketball for the Aggies. Frank received a commission as a regular Army officer after graduating and began what turned into a twenty-four-year military career. Melba was the ultimate army wife, waiting while he faithfully served in three wars. She wrote him every day. Their service to their country required a move approximately every three years. They were stationed in Virginia, Germany (twice), and the US Military Academy at West Point, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Frank and Melba brought four children into the world during their world travels, never giving birth the same place twice. The family often traveled together, creating precious memories all across Europe. They eventually settle back in Utah and bought their home in Ogden while Frank was serving in Vietnam. Melba worked for some twenty years at the IRS service center in Ogden. She loved her co-workers. Besides her family, her loves were the Utah Jazz, cooking, candy-making and hosting Christmas. She is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Franklin Karl Hazen, Jr. and their four children: Christine Hazen Webb (Mike) Centerville, F. Craig Hazen (Justine), Ogden, Michelle Wilde (Dean), Pocatello, ID, Denise Hazen Glasmann, Layton, and her brother, Ken Charlesworth, Hooper. She has twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct 18 at 2:00 PM at Leavitt’s Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden A viewing will be held on Monday, October 17, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Tuesday also at the Mortuary.Interment Leavitt’s Aultorest Memorial Park.
