Ray Maurice Powell

Ray M. Powell passed away August 10, 2014 with his wife Ruth by his side. He was born April 6, 1924 in Calumet, Oklahoma. Ray was the 5th of eight children born to James P. Powell and Ora Winfrey Powell.
Ray attended High School in Calumet and then entered the Army Air Corp in October 1942. While stationed in Lincoln, Nebraska he met the love of his life Ruth Elizabeth Stewart. Ray was discharged from the service January 1946 and married Ruth May 2, 1947.
Ray and Ruth later moved to San Bernardino, California where Ray worked as a sheet metal specialist at Norton Air Force Base. In 1965 he was transferred to Hill Air Force Base and made their home in Ogden, Utah. In June 1980, Ray retired with 32 years of government service. After he retired, Ray and Ruth took many cruises, and hosted many bus trips with the “Leo Group” to Nevada where they acquired many long lasting friendships. Among the many talents that Ray had besides gardening, wood working; Ray enjoyed the summer time when one of his grandchildren would spend their vacation time in Ogden.
Ray and Ruth were both members of the Trinity Presbyterian Church. Ray passed down many valuable traits to his grandchildren. His grandchildren were so proud to spend time with him learning how to pull weeds, pick vegetables, and even paint; all the time learning his words of wisdom.
Ray is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth E. Powell, one brother Jimmie G. Powell of Katy, Texas; one son James Powell of Ogden, Utah; three daughters, Ruth (Mike) Bourgoin, Suzan (Dana) Garrett, and Carol (Thomas) Pinner. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lovell, Fred, and Robert; his three sisters Francis, Evelyn, and Billie Jean.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 18th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., at Leavitt’s Mortuary, 836-36th Street, Ogden with a viewing prior to service from 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Sunday, August 17th from 6-8 p.m. at Leavitt’s Mortuary. Interment immediately following services.
