Walter Salazar

May 9, 1938 - May 14, 2015

Walter Salazar, Born May 9, 1938 in Santa Fe, NM to Lucas Salazar & Consuelo (Connie) Herrera, passed away peacefully at home, May 14, 2015.  Walt was a long time Ogden resident, a friend to many, who seemed to meet and make acquaintances wherever he went.  He graduated with honors from Ben Lomond High School (Class of 1956) and later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, service for which he was most proud.

He married Vickie Lou Westenskow (later divorced), they had a son, Shawn Walter, and a daughter, Sara Ann. Walt later graduated from Weber State College and began a 30 year career at Hill AFB, while again serving his country in the Air Force Reserve where he retired as Master Sergeant after 29 years of service. Walt later married Clara Loy Olson (deceased) and helped raise Michael and Mitzi Baker. After an accident left Loy incapacitated, Walt showed tremendous compassion and resolve as a constant caretaker, while at the same time raising several grandchildren who had been left in his care — Skylar Watkins, Lukus Sherman, and Alliyah Aleshire whom are grateful to their “Papa” for his selfless service.

He is survived by his son; Shawn (Jessica) Salazar, Salt Lake City; daughter, Sara Ann (Todd) Williams, Chandler, AZ; step son, Michael (Susie) Baker, Woodland, WA; and step daughter, Mitzi McClain, Ogden; His sisters: Virginia Cuff, Marana, AZ, Loyce Bradshaw, Ft. Mohave, AZ, and Mary Ann Ala, Albuquerque, NM; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Clara Loy Salazar; and his brother, Joe Salazar.

Walter and I were in the military together. He showed to everyone what a patriot was and that has always stuck with me. May his spirit rest knowing that all who knew him are comforted at this time. He will be missed by all.

Although I haven't seen Walt since out time in the reserves (many years ago) I've never forgotten his positive attitude and great sense of humor. We had some great times on summer camp trips around the country. Walt was a true patriot.

I'm so sad that I can't be there with you to say goodbye and celebrate the great life you had, you are on my mind and in my heart forever. I'm sure he surrounded by loved ones right now and if i know my uncle he's giving my dad (Joe Salazar) a hard time right now. RIP uncle Walt, love you. Michele Salazar
