John Wayne “Shagg” Douglass, age 80, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, son, uncle and friend peacefully passed away in his sleep on February 5, 2019, following complications from a stroke suffered last October. Wayne was born June 7, 1938, to John Bingham Douglass and Mary Florence Douglass in Smithfield, Utah.
Wayne was the first graduating class from Ben Lomond High School in 1956. Most will remember Wayne as a joint owner of Howe Rents of Ogden where he worked for 18 years prior to purchasing the company in 1978. In his younger years, Wayne worked for the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind and briefly for the Union Pacific Railroad as a police officer. Although he had many professional endeavors, Wayne will be remembered as an educator and mentor to all that were fortunate to learn from him. He was a patient and a thoughtful teacher to all.
Wayne was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1959, he married Judy A. Grow, they were later divorced. He later married the love of his life Shirley Ann Kopinski (Giachino) in 1974, and together they spent 45 wonderful years.
Wayne loved the outdoors and was an advocate for the ranchers that he helped. He enjoyed hunting antelope, prairie dogs, pheasants and ducks. Although he was a lifelong hunter, he loved all of his dogs that were members of his family over the years. He was a skilled gambler and loved blackjack. He loved riding dirt bikes, driving sand rails, participating and watching the sand drags and pioneering the Jericho sand dunes with Shirley, his daughter and sons. Wayne and Shirley were founding members of the Ogden Valley Sandrail Association and members of the International Off-Road Racing Association and fabricated award winning sandrails.
Thirty years ago, they built their dream home in Marriott-Slaterville and have been surrounded by supporting neighbors and lifelong friends.
