Perhaps just a simple headline in a Paper that would say, Our Country is in mourning For a soldier died today. (From popular poem by A. Lawrence) Bert Lee Blodgett passed away peacefully in Maui Memorial Hospital in Kahului, HI on March 23, 2019. Bert was married to Patricia Lou McWilliams on September 11, 1949. They divorced in 1973. He married Dorothy L. Milligan Close on June 5, 1974. She died September 28, 1983 of cancer. He married G. Sherley Coffin Stoddard on June 1, 1985. Bert served in the military from February 8, 1943 to November 10, 1945. His decorations include the Bronze Star with the accompanying Combat Infantrymans Badge. He was wounded on October 16, 1944 at Clemente, Italy, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart while serving with the 88th Infantry Division, 350th Infantry Regiment, Company G. He attended Weber High School and Weber College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Utah in August, 1950. Berts successful career spanned 33 years in the Federal service, working a number of those years as an employee relations specialist at Hill AFB, Utah. In 1966 while President of the Air Force Association, he arranged many events including the Weber Valley Air Fair featuring the Air Force Thunderbirds. He served a 3-year tour of duty at Chateauroux AB in France from January 16, 1957 to July 6, 1959. He was base personnel officer at Phu Cat, Nha Trang, and Tan Son Nhut Air Bases while on two tours of duty in Vietnam for 9 months in 1967 and 2 years between 1968 and 1970. He retired as the Labor Relations Officer in civilian personnel at Hill AFB on August 31, 1979 and began spending much of his time in Lahaina, Hawaii. He accompanied his wife, Sherley, to RAF Upper Heyford, United Kingdom, in 1986. During their 7 years there, he re-visited many countries as well as several new places and islands. He moved permanently to Lahaina in 1993 and traveled to Singapore, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, the Scandinavian capitals, mainland China, Japan, and returning visits to the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. One of his favorite sayings was, "A moving target is harder to hit." Bert was a member of the BPO Elks and the Fraternal Order of Eagles for over 60 years, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Farm Bureau, and AARP. He was a Founding Sponsor of the National Museum of the US Army. Surviving are his wife, Sherley, Lahaina, HI; two daughters, Pam Burbank of Ogden, UT, and Cynda Lee Hodges, Phoenix, AZ; and son Michael Blodgett of Phoenix, AZ,; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Earl (Addie) Blodgett, Ogden, UT. His extended family included Cindy Lee (Steve) Arndt, Mesquite, NV, and Kevin Stoddard, Clearfield, UT, five grandsons, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amel and Eleanor Batchelor Blodgett. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone, part of us went with you the day you were called home. ... Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 1, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th St., Ogden, UT. Family will greet friends on Sunday, March 31, 2019 from 6:00 8:00 pm and prior to services o Monday from 1:00 1:45 pm.
