Betty Jean was born to Ralph E. and Mary Jane Shurtliff on June 1, 1923, in Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School and went on to attend Weber College and Utah State University. It was while at Weber College that she met her future husband, Robert Reed. Soon After Robert enlisted in the Navy, they began a romantic correspondence that culminated in their marriage soon after World War II ended. They would continue to be the love of each others lives for the next 64 years until his death in 2010. Betty worked as a head secretary at Bonneville High School, Uintah Elementary and for the Superintendent of Weber School District. After her retirement, Betty took up a passion for painting and was highly thought of by those who witnessed her artwork. She and her husband Robert traveled extensively during their retirement; they especially loved traveling in Italy and Ireland. They both were fond of the people of Ireland and each had a deep appreciation of the Irish warmth and wit. Betty displayed the same endearing qualities to her friends and family. Betty passed away on March 20, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her children and their families: James Reed and Jeanne Heuving; Nancy Harlin; Bobbi and Craig Wold; Lori and Todd Matlack. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Bettys "special angel" Debbie Manzel and their heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful staff of Legacy House of Ogden for the kindness and care they provided to Betty in her last years.
