Joe died peacefully in his sleep at home in Ogden on Monday, March 2, 2015. Joe was born at home in Salt Lake City to Mary Edna Memmott Brenchley and William Wynford Terry on Sunday, January 21, 1934. He was the second son and middle child of three. Joe grew up in Ogden in the home he built with his father on Canyon Road. After graduating from Ogden High School and attending a year at the University of Utah, Joe enlisted in the Army. During the Korean War he was stationed in Japan and served in the Army Intelligence until 1955. Joe earned his bachelors degree in fine arts from the University of Utah in 1959. That same year he moved to Southern California with his first wife, Micaela (Mike) Rae Hollcraft, and began a career in insurance with Allstate (Sears). After the birth of their first daughter and moving back to Ogden in 1962, he joined his father-in-laws insurance adjusting business. His second daughter joined the family in 1966. In 1972, on the cusp of the 1973 bear market, Joe began a new career with Merrill Lynch where he was a stockbroker until he retired in 1999. "His integrity was above reproach," said former partner, Brad Waddoups. He treated everyone fairly and honestly - not just legally, but ethically. During these years, Joe also contributed his time and energy to the Ogden Weber Chamber of Commerce, serving as President of the Board of Governors. "He was a man of action," said Larry Crouch, Chamber Membership Director. "He researched every new program before he made decisions. He was open and he would listen to you before he made up his mind. But he always saw what needed to be done in the community. He was a wonderful man." In 2005, Joe married his second wife, Evalyn McBurnie. Over the years, they hiked in the mountains, traveled and enjoyed their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved fishing the dry fly, hunting pheasant and chukar, listening to jazz, going to the theater, eating cioppino, working in his garden, golfing, reading, and spending time with family and life- long friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Evalyn, his sister Elayne Terry Woodin (Don), his daughter Kirsten Terry Melton (Mark), his daughter, Jennifer Catherine Thompson (Scott), stepdaughters, Jill Hobbs (Brian) and Heather Rich (Orrian). Also, surviving are his grandchildren: Laura Innes Melton, William Alden Melton; step grandchildren: Nate Hobbs, Jessica Hobbs, Jessica Hubbard Dustin, Jeff Hobbs, Hannah Hobbs, Matisse Ava Rich; great grandchildren; Mason Hobbs, Wyatt Hobbs, Isaac Hobbs, and his dog Sally; along with many nieces and nephews. Joe lived a full life that exemplified hard work, loyalty, generosity, and integrity and had a lot of fun in the bargain! Joe will be sorely missed. His legacy lives on in his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. It is said that "Success is when you look back on your life and your memories make you smile." Joe left this earth with so much to smile about. His life was a grand success! The family would like to thank the loving staff of Legacy Home Care. The Funeral Services will be held at Leavitts Mortuary Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah on Monday, March 9, 2015 at 12:00 PM. Family will visit with friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM at Leavitts Mortuary. Interment immediately following the services. "I love you more."
