Roka Jean Tingey Raymond, 89, quietly left this world on the evening of November 1st, 2017 and is now reunited with her husband and heavenly family, who surely have been waiting anxiously for her. When she left she was surrounded by her earthly family in a room filled with love. Roka was born in Woodruff, Utah on June 8, 1928, a snowy June day! She spent her childhood there and would cultivate a love for Woodruff that would last throughout her life. She loved that little spot in this world. At 14 she moved with her family to Ogden, continuing her education at Ogden High School (where she graduated in 1946) and Weber State College. She worked at the railroad in Ogden, the Pacific Fruit Express, where she met her future husband, Wendell, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Though she was warned by her sister to watch out for those "car toads" as the workers were called, she fell for one of them and they soon married. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 30, 1949. In 1958 they adopted, a son, whom they named Brett, and in 1960, a daughter whom they named Rowena, after Rokas mother. She would later work for the Ogden City School district at Mt. Ogden Jr. High School, first as a secretary and then teaching and counseling students in learning various job skills. She loved her family and that love was present at every family function, all her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids activities and special moments. She was there for us all, and it meant a lot. She loved her cats. Maybe as much as her family. She loved music and it was a big part of her life. She sang in many different choirs and was particularly proud to have sung in the Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. She sang in double-trios, and in a group called the "Singing Mothers". They would sometimes practice in her living room, directly affecting Rokas children in a wonderful way with the beautiful harmonies they would make. She also loved knitting on her knitting machine, making scores of blankets, beanies, and especially Christmas stockings which hang on fireplaces throughout Rokas family! She was a swimmer and was a regular at the old Deseret Gym for many years. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, and working in her yard. She loved her church, and was very active in her ward, the Ogden 44th Ward, which would later be called the Sullivan Hollow Ward. Some of her callings were: Counselor in Stake Mutual (Young Women), Primary President, Stake and Ward Music Chairperson and Chorister and Choir Director. She loved all things New Zealand, the land her father served in as a missionary, and where her name came from. Everybody loved Roka Jean. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell, her Mother Rowena, Father Thomas Josiah, brothers Loren and Willard and two sisters (can we call them her best friends) Genett and Mavis. She leaves behind step-son Charles (Katie -Syracuse, UT); son Brett (Becky -Kaysville, UT); and daughter Rowena (David -North Ogden, UT). Grand children TaRena, Ryan, Brooke, Geoffrey, Brittany, Aymee, Carlee, Kelsey and Benjamin. And 18 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank all at Country Pines for the extraordinary care, empathy and love they showed to Roka. There is an empty room now and an empty room in all of our hearts. The funeral will be held Saturday November 11th at 11:00 AM at Leavitts Mortuary 835 36th St in Ogden. There will be a viewing on Friday November 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and also at 10:00AM on Saturday, one hour previous to the funeral.
