Obituary

Beth Olsen McFarlandJuly 22, 1927 ~ April 30, 2012Beth Olsen McFarland passed away peacefully on April 30, 2012. Beth was the youngest child and only daughter of Aileen (Brown) and Orange A. Olsen, she was born on July 22, 1927 in Cedar City, Utah. She spent the majority of her life in Ogden, Utah. She met the love of her life, Elwood Keyes McFarland, at Weber State College and they married on January 1, 1949 in a record-breaking blizzard. Beth and Elwood lived in Chicago, Illinois while Elwood attended Loyola Dental School but they were anxious to return to home to Ogden to raise their family. She was a devoted mother and wife and enjoyed sewing, skiing, golf, bridge, and any project that involved her girls. She was the ultimate mother running from swimming and dance lessons, while knitting socks for ice skating, and then having a fabulous dinner on the table each night. Beth was involved in the Ogden community through many service and social organizations, including the Ladies Dental Association, Altruist, PTA, many bridge clubs and golf groups. She was an active member of the LDS church, serving in many capacities. She especially treasured her 13 years as the teacher for the 11 year old scouts. Beth was an excellent example of a life well lived. She devoted some of her time to pursuing her own family heritage as well as Elwoods. Joes Valley was a place where they were able to renew the Olsen Legacy. They were able to travel and enjoyed trips abroad. Beth had an excellent sense of humor, and delighted all of us with her outgoing personality. She was comfortable in any setting, from a subway in New York City or on a cruise ship in Alaska. She organized family trips in the pink station wagon, complete with picnic lunches eagerly devoured on the tail gate. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Grant, Don Dee, and Homer. Beth is survived by her husband, Elwood, daughters, Nancy (Terry) Brown (Alpine, Utah), Carol (Hugh) Garner (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Diane (Brad) Link (Dalton Gardens, Idaho), eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
