February 10, 1927 ~ November 17, 2016
Blaine Belnap, M.D., 89, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016 peacefully at home from causes incident to age. He was born February 10, 1927 to Volney Bryan Belnap and Rose Marie West in Ogden, Utah. Blaine graduated from Ogden High School, Brigham Young University and University of Utah Medical School. He married Geraldine Smith in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 18, 1955, they later divorced.
Blaine joined the U.S. Army after High School graduation. He trained at Camp Roberts, CA and Fort Benning, GA. He was first stationed at Wiesbaden, Germany then sent to Paris, France as a post war photographer at the peace conferences. Blaine was honorably discharged December 31, 1946.
He accepted a call to the Netherlands mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1948. He left for Holland when the European Saints were suffering from lack of food. He took with him two trunks full of food, dishes, bedding and clothing to distribute, and he lived largely on potatoes throughout his mission.
When he returned home in 1950 he continued his studies at Brigham Young University. He was accepted into the University of Utahs School of Medicine in the fall of 1952. Following Medical School graduation he practiced general family medicine in California. He soon returned to the University of Utah to specialize in Psychiatry.
Blaine began his private practice in Ogden, Utah in 1961, later joining McKay Dee Hospitals staff where he served as Chief of Psychiatry for 16 years. He also provided counseling at Weber State University, Thiokol Job Corps, Wyoming State Mental Hospital, LDS Social Services and Weber County Mental Health. Blaine loved his patients and they loved him. Throughout all his years practicing psychiatry he had a publicly listed telephone number so his patients could call him any time they needed anything. This rarity proved great love for his patients and people in general.
In 2007 at the age of 80, he retired from formally practicing medicine, but he never stopped counseling and helping others. He was a kind, gentle, generous father, granddad and grandpa great. Although he worked tirelessly at his chosen profession his children never felt slighted for his attention. He was a very attentive hands-on Dad.
Blaine was an avid outdoorsman, athlete and animal lover. He had an amazing intellect, keen mind and love of learning. He was a man of great character and set a rich example for his children, grandchildren and beyond.
Blaine is survived by his son, Colonel C. Scott Belnap, M.D. (Christina) Oaho, Hawaii; daughter, Susan Bunnell (Bruce) Ogden, Utah; 7 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
