Ogden Utah Carlla Jo Offret Wallace, age 71, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by loved ones. Being superstitious, it was only fitting that she left us on Thursday, January 12, 2017, as Friday the 13th was not her favorite day.
Carlla was born September 11, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Arthur and Odetta Offret. She was raised in North Salt Lake, Utah. She met Ted Wallace in California and was married October 7, 1967 in Utah. They lived in Huntington Beach, California where they had two boys Kenny and T.J. They moved to Bountiful, Utah where they welcomed Scott. Carlla was sure she would have her own baseball team until her first baby girl, Corrie was born. Soon after, they moved to West Jordan, Utah and had the Twins Angie and Andy. Ironically, it was the two girls who excelled in sports. Carlla and Ted later divorced, and after raising six children, she moved to Ogden, Utah to care for her mother Odetta.
We all have a few of those pivotal people who have left an impact in our lives. People who happen to be in the right place at the right time and inadvertently, but completely, change the course of our lives for the better; Carlla was one of those people.
In addition tothe security she provided, she was also a lot of fun! She had an adorably irreverent sense of humor. Evident with the weddings she occasionally attended dressed to impress wearing overalls, flannel, and a straw hat. With teeth blacked out she would strum the washboard and offer a rendition of You Are My Sunshine as a tribute to thenewlyweds. She collected many things including, shot glasses, outhouse art and figurines. Her favorite color was yellow and she loved the smiley face because they made her happy. She would take the family on week long camping adventures teaching her children how to shoot a rifle, wash clothes with a washboard and survive in the wild. She was a mama bear who protected her cubs with sometimes surprising ferocity. Over the years, the backyard was a veritable playground: a 40-foot high zip line originating from the branches of a huge tree, an above-ground pool for the summer, a softball pitching camp, forts, ducks, chickens, rabbits for Easter, hot dogs and Smores over the fire pit, with an occasional complaint from a neighbor. When the fire department would arrive, she would simply offer them a hot dog as they laughed and pulled away. Her holiday decorations in the front yard are still the most creative you will ever see. Every square foot was utilized. She even won Best of Overall for the Light up West Jordan contest. The back patio was turned into a wood shop as nothing was store-bought or generic. It was all unique and masterfully designed by Carlla; and this is before Pinterest! Her ideas could have easily filled an entire HGTV DIY television series. And it wasnt just Christmas. Every holiday, seriously EVERY holiday, was an excuse to go all out. When it came to her creative genius, she was inspiring, and humble, and underappreciated.
Carlla was very resourceful, she could make and repair anything with duct tape. She always thought of others before herself. She didnt have much to give, yet she gave everyone loving warmth. She often had holes in her pants but would never buy new things for herself; always thinking of her children first. She had a great love of the outdoors, with her creative mind she could bring the outdoors inside the house. She especially loved flowers and had a passion for decorating for events and weddings.
Carlla raised six wildly unique children but was somehow able to do it all and still have fun. Her later years were rough with her health declining. Even then she enjoyed hosting parties around the fire pit in the back yard under the outstretched branches of a gigantic sycamore. We would sing together while she reminisced about her choir days.
She is survived by her children: TJ (Melissa), Scott (Abbey), Corrie, Angie (Chris), Andy and one adopted son, Travis Bench, eleven grandchildren, eight adopted grandchildren, two great-grand children, a sister, Lona Waite and her brother, Farrell Offret. She is preceded in death by her parents, Odetta and Art Offret, sister, ReNee Duerden, son, Kenny Wallace and grandson, Joshua Wallace.
Special thanks to the IHC Hospice staff and an extra special thanks to our brother Andy for caring for our mother during her time of need!
