Obituary

Charles (Chuck) Isaac Liff passed away on May 26, 2013 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 60. Chuck was a wonderful, engaging and humorous person who was always optimistic. He dealt with his cancer as he did everything else his in life - full tilt - even to the point of skiing 47 days this past season while fighting Stage 4 pancreatic cancer (some of which required skiing with a chemotherapy infusion dose, aka "ball of poison" still hooked up to his central catheter). Chuck was born in West Hartford, Connecticut on December 3, 1952. He attended Conard High School and then Cornell University. He did graduate work in systems ecology at the University of Georgia in Athens in the late 1970s while also working as a climbing ranger for the Mohonk Preserve (the "Gunks") in New Paltz, NY. Later he moved to Logan, UT working for an environmental consulting firm and Utah State University and then joined the Environmental Protection Agency and the US Forest Service where he worked in Corvallis, OR, Las Vegas, NV and, most recently, Layton, UT where he retired earlier this year. Chucks enthusiasm and caring touched people wherever he went. His infectious sense of humor and sheer joyous wonder of the world spilled over into all aspects of his life creating an easy path for making lifelong friends. He was especially grateful to the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute for their compassionate care, and his fellow chemo travelers at the infusion center where he gained solace, and shared his zest for living. He will be missed by many friends across the US and around the world. His approach to life has been an inspiration to all he touched, and an exemplary role model for his wonderful children. His spirit was and is nothing short of extraordinary. He was preceded in death by his mother May Weinstein and his father Benjamin Liff. He is survived by his brother Allan Liff, and his wife Merlise Wan, and their two children Lisa and William. Chuck was a practicing Buddhist and a celebration of his life will be hosted by the Thai Buddhist Temple at Leavitts Mortuary in Ogden, UT on Saturday, June 1st, 2013.
