Obituary

Charles Hobart Smith, 90, died on June 15, 2012 of Congestive Heart Failure. He was born on April 19, 1922 in Glen Rock, PA., the son of George H. and Elsie V. Smith. At an early age his family moved to New Freedom, PA where he was educated in the public schools. He graduated from New Freedom High School in 1940 and attended his 72nd class reunion in May of this year. He entered into an apprentice tool and die career. He then enlisted in the Army Ordnance in 1942 in York, PA., advancing to tech sergeant, where he served in the United States, France and Germany. He married Alma C. Smith on July 2, 1943 in Louisville, KY. During their marriage, they lived at Ft. Knox, KY., PA., and Middleborough, MD. They moved to Clearfield, UT in 1959 and to Riverdale in 1971. He worked for Sperry Rand on the Sergeant Missile. He later worked for Ogden City School District. He has been a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He is a member of the following Masonic organizations: Unity Lodge No. 18, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1977; Ogden York Rite Bodies, serving as Recorder for a number of years; El Kalah Shrine, where he served as Secretary of the Ogden Shrine Club and Miriam Chapter No. 14 Eastern Star, where he served as Worthy Patron. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Charlen M. (Larry) Mitchell, his grandson, David Mitchell. Also he is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma C.; son, Dennis W. Smith, his parents and his brother. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden with Worshipful Master Timothy L. Stenner of Unity Lodge #18 conducting. There will be a viewing Monday, June 18, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the El Kalah Shrine Transportation Fund, 650 East South Temple St. Salt Lake City, UT 84102. Interment Leavitts Aultorest Memorial Park.
