Constantine (Gus) Boodrookas, 90, passed away August 28, 2012. He was born February 5, 1922 to Peter and Froso Boodrookas who came from Greece to begin the American dream. They opened a cafe on Ogdens Historical 25th Street, but their dream was cut short by the death of Guss father Peter when Gus was only nine years old. At that point, Gus and his two sisters, Magdalene (Carl) Glad and Helen (Al) Ydo, both whom have preceded Gus in death, went to work to help their Mother keep the small family a float. Times were hard, but Gus always spoke of his Mother Frosos courage and strength. Out of these experiences came Guss ability to be frugal and make a dollar stretch. He taught his family the value of hard work and saving. Gus graduated from Ogden High School in 1940. He attended Weber State College for two years, then he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He traveled to air bases in Colorado, Michigan, Florida and Kansas, then left the states in the B-29 group. A World War II veteran, Gus loved his country and served it with dignity and honor. Gus married Gwendolyn Hansen in 1965. They were later divorced, but they remained life-long friends. Gwen brought four children from a previous marriage to the union: Justine Wilson, Michael (Lynn) Johnston, Kathleen (Rod) Smith, and Kenneth (Karri) Johnston, and Gus and Gwen had one daughter together Nicki (Mike) Spohn. Guss great joys and frustrations were his children and grandchildren, yet he loved and cared for them all. Gus also had three nieces whom he loved like daughters, Diana (Haven) Simmons, Linda Shiffman, and Tina (David) Spencer. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him great joy. Watching his first grandson Darin (Virginia) Stoddard and granddaughter Sloane (Scott) Stoddard grow up with his daughter Nicki. There was dress up, tag, and fishing trips. Ronnette (Don) Howell pleased Gus with her scholastic achievements, and Jason Johnston came along later to deliver those big hugs of his. There were baseball and soccer games watching Jeremy Smith, Robert (Wendy) Smith, and Steven (Shelli) Smith play game after game to Guss delight. And every Halloween Gus would roam Kennys neighborhood with Summer (Micah) Young, Brock (Faye) Johnston, and Spencer (Chelsi) Johnston trick or treat. Family parties at Justines house with Ryan (Connie) Wilson and Morgan (Joshua) Price bringing Gus wonderful food and joy. Later with Lilly and Asher Price, Morgan brought Gus coffee and burgers in the evening when Guss driving days were over. And of course, Gus helped Nicki to raise her children Adam Boodrookas and Amanda Alviso. He would come and stay and cook and clean for them during Nickis time at Utah State University. And later with Kaitlin Stewart and Steven Alviso Jr, Amanda would visit her Papou taking him to dinner and visiting for hours. There are 31 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren in total. As the leader of this family, Gus taught us to be strong and never give up, to keeping working and doing, yet to be tenderhearted and kind to others. Gus has been a faithful member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Ogden. His faith in Christ got him through his last days with Prostrate Cancer. Gus had many friends he loved to visit, and many fond memories with each of them. Gus was taken care of in his last months by Advocate Hospice. The loving hands of LaDawn Cox, Kenna McCormick, and Mike Rigby gave Gus extraordinary care. He looked forward to Kenna bringing him his coffee every morning and LaDawns visits every week. LaDawn planted his tomatoes and watered them often. The family wants to thank them so very much for their amazing support and love through this difficult time.
