Dan R. Gibson1946-2011Theres a hole in the world now, in the place where he was, theres now just nothing. . . He is gone. Only a hole remains, a void, a gap, never to be filled" Nicholas Wolterstorff.Dan passed away peacefully at home, Wednesday, October 19, 2011 surrounded by his family. He was born in Ogden to Dean J. Gibson and Kathryn Cook and attended schools in California, Roy, and Ogden. He graduated from Bonneville High and attended Weber State and University of Utah. Dan served a mission in the Republic of South Vietnam, with the 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines in the United States Marine Corps. He worked for the US Postal Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, owned and operated a landscaping business, sold real estate and was active in politics as a Weber County delegate for the Democratic Party. Dan was an amazing man, always showing determination, fortitude and courage despite the loss of his legs and many other health complications. In a recent newscast a prominent woman was talking about her recently deceased husband and stated "Well, how do you live without your legs?" We felt sorry for this family. Sorry that they had not known Dan, for he would have told then: "You forget about your limitations and you get in that wheel chair and you take your family camping in the wilderness of Idaho and the Uintas. You build a tree house. You take them snowmobiling in Yellowstone. When your son calls you at midnight because his VW has "quit" you amaze him and drive it home with one gear. You buy a Kobota tractor and move dirt, you mow your field, plow your driveway and the neighbors as well. You buy that toy hauler trailer and go camping every other week." He would have told them life doesnt end because youve lost your legs, and that there is still a lot of life yet to be lived and enjoyed. Yes, what a shame that family didnt have the pleasure of meeting this incredible man. Those who were lucky enough to have met Dan will forever think of him when the subject of cowboy commitment comes up. He was a hero to all. Dan leaves a legacy of compassion, generosity, hard work, honesty and integrity. He believed keeping ones word defined a mans character.Dan is survived by his wife Kaye (Racker), his sons Seth; Matt (Tera) granddaughter Aspyn; Charles (Kim) granddaughters Lauren and Makena and grandson Logan; brother Jim (Chloe-Ann); half-brothers Kris, Bart, and Kim; half-sisters Deana, Kathy and Lynette. He was preceded in death by his father Dean (LouJean), mother Kathryn and his beloved mother-in-law Neola Racker. The family would like to thank Bonnie and Rachel and the rest of the staff at Applegate Hospice for their compassionate care of Dan. Also, big thanks to Bobby, Akamu, Zac, Jamie from Weber States Football Team for all their help getting Dan to and from his Saturday dialysis treatments and Niv, thank you for always being there for Dan.
