Darlene Hazel Hobson's Obituary

Darlene Hazel Hobson passed away peacefully on March 10, 2014. She was born to Herbert Eugene and Hazel Lillian McNeil Hobson in Oxford, Idaho. Her family moved to Brigham City and then to Ogden. She graduated from Ogden High School. She married Lynn Russell (later divorced) then married James VanderSteen (later divorced). She was a second mother to her nephew Richard E. Nicholas (Rick), niece Leslie A. Nicholas Earle and later became a second grandmother to Jesse R.N. Earle and Trevor R. Earle. She began working for Scowcrofts in 1952 and found payroll to be her forte. Her career took off when, through acquisitions, she found herself working for Smiths Food and Drug Corporation. She became Payroll Manager for the entire corporation, served on the Board of Directors for Smiths Credit Union and, after twenty years, retired in May 1988. Darlene was a very loving, caring, understanding and generous person. She made many donations to organizations that benefit children. Education was important to her so she arranged gifts to Weber State University and University of Utah Nursing and Pediatric programs as well as donating to the Weber State Athletics Department. She felt that helping to provide for nursing programs, especially for children, was extremely essential. Through her donations to Weber States athletics department she also helped many athletes achieve their goals. She LOVED Weber State Basketball and rarely missed a game in the last thirty-ish years! She definitely bled purple! She enjoyed our family get togethers, traveling, bowling, hair appointments, having her nails done, pedicures, lunches with the Bowling Girls at The Horse and spending time with all of her countless other friends. She truly loved you all! Darlene is survived by her sister Phyllis Nicholas and brother in law Richard M. Nicholas (Nick), brother Max Hobson and sister in law Linda Hobson, sister in law Myril Hobson and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Hazel, her brothers Albert, Harry and Jack, and several nieces. At Darlenes request, funeral services will be a private, family graveside service at Ogden City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations in honor of Darlene to: Weber State Athletics Department Mens Basketball/Randy Rahe 3404 University Circle Ogden, UT 84408 Darlene was dearly loved by all who knew her.
