David B. Havas David Bert Havas died September 1, 2012, after a sudden illness. Born January 1, 1941, in Amsterdam, Holland, Bert was the eldest child of Gustav ("Gus") and Jeannette ("Netty") Havas. Not long after he was born, his family - including a new baby sister (Carla) - was sent to the concentration camps during the horror of the Holocaust. One of the few families to survive the Holocaust intact, Berts was expanded by a couple of brothers (Fred and Max) in Holland, then by another brother (Ed) after the family moved to the United States. Bert graduated from Ogden High School in 1959 and the University of Utah College of Law in 1972. Thereafter, he dedicated his professional life to helping those in need of a champion to represent their interests. Bert was fiercely devoted to the concepts of freedom, liberty, justice and equality. Before fighting for them in the courtroom, Bert fought for them in Vietnam, where he served with distinction and honor. A bona fide war hero, Bert was awarded the bronze star with oak leaf clusters for valor under fire. Bert returned from war to assist his family after his fathers death. Bert married the love of his life, Sandy Morgan, in 1972, and shared 40 wonderful years with her. A more loving and devoted wife and partner is beyond imagination; that Bert loved her back with the same depth and devotion is beyond doubt. Bert is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; her children Marietta Priest (Bart), Nate Morgan (Val), Mitzi Bissell (Tim), and Cathy Beus (Duane); siblings Carla Baruch (Ted), Fred Havas (Kasey), Max Havas (Pat), and Ed Havas (Colleen Elliott); many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and friends and colleagues too numerous to count. He was preceded in death by his parents. A service to remember Bert and celebrate his life will be held Thursday, September 6, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah. Military honors will be accorded. Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, Berts family requests that you make a donation to the ACLU, 355 North 300 West, SLC 84103, the Joyce Hansen Food Bank, 2504 F Ave. Ogden, Utah 84401 or to the charity of your choice Please send condolences and a memory at www.leavittsmortuary.com
