Ogden-UtahDavid Calvin Petersen was born January 3, 1935 in Hyrum, Utah to Leland and Thelma Liljenquist Petersen. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 15, 2011 while at home after a courageous battle with cancer. David, who was known to many as Bud, lived a full life. After graduating from South Cache High School, he served a full time LDS mission to the Samoan Islands, and never stopped being a missionary. He graduated from Utah State University and went on to earn his Doctors of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry. He later received an Optometric Physician degree. He was married to Sharel Lee Hovey on July 14, 1967 in Los Angeles Temple. They are the proud parents of three sons: David Scott, Brent Lee, and Anthony Randal. David enjoyed community involvement throughout his life. He served in the Utah National Guard Medical Corp and was later elected to the Simi Valley California Board of Education. He served as the Ventura County Chairman to the Republican Party to elect the Attorney General for the State of California. In Utah, he was the campaign manager for the Uintah County Sheriff and he served on the Utah State Board of Optometry. After retiring from Optometry, he had time to pursue two other interests that brought him joy: sheep ranching and trucking. David was a dedicated, hard-working husband and father who sacrificed for his family his whole life. He had a love of learning and never ceased educating himself. He was kind, loving, and quick to help anyone in his path, whether it be friend or foe. He loved talking to people whether they were a patient in his chair or someone on the street. And if you were lucky, you would have been caught up in a political discussion with him.He loved joking around and it was quite common to see him smiling. He was an avid sports fan, and he was a pitcher in a commercial fast-pitch softball league. He enjoyed working with the sheep, fishing, going for drives up the canyon, and chatting with his brother Rod, as well as his Uncle Bruce who gave him his nickname, Bud. David was gentle, patient and had a pure love for his wife and posterity. He was completely devoted to his wife. He loved her very much and she loved him in return. He absolutely loved spending time with his grandchildren. David had great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. His children will always look up to him as an example of how to be a kind and loving father. He also had a great, unwavering love for the gospel and enjoyed serving the Lord in whatever capacity he was asked. David is survived by his wife Sharel and their sons Scott, Brent (Jennifer), and Tony, along with their grandchildren Abigail, Vivian, Lilly and David Calvin Bud. He was one of nine siblings: Wallace, Mary, Eloise, Eleanor, Rodney, Kathryn, Marty and Gerald. David was preceded in death by Leland, Thelma, Tressa (stepmother) and Wallace.
