Obituary

Donald Carl Cursoe, a man whose life was as rich and varied as the melodies he so fondly hummed, passed away peacefully in May 2026, in Murray, Utah. Born in 1931, Donald embodied a steadfast dedication to family, knowledge, and service, weaving these strands into a tapestry that defined his remarkable existence.

Donald’s career spanned over four decades, during which he dedicated himself to designing and developing hardware for the defense industry. His work, often conducted with a modesty befitting a child of the Depression era, reflected a deep-seated commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of others. Though he never sought the spotlight, his contributions resonated profoundly within his field, quietly shaping advancements with understated excellence.

Education was a cornerstone in Donald’s life journey. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois before earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. This rigorous academic foundation propelled his lifelong engagement with the evolving worlds of science and technology, areas in which he maintained an abiding curiosity and passion.

Before his technical pursuits, Donald served his country nobly as a navigator in the United States Marine Corps. This chapter of his life exemplified his valor and sense of duty, characteristics that would permeate his personal and professional relationships throughout the years.

Donald’s personality was a mosaic of warmth, intellect, and charm. He was known to be easy to converse with and endlessly engaging, balancing respectfulness with a keen intelligence that allowed him to traverse topics ranging from opera and international cinema to sports and contemporary science with equal aplomb. His kindness, generosity, and compassion endeared him to all who knew him, while his sense of humor provided a joyful light in countless conversations.

His passions extended beyond his work and intellectual pursuits. Donald found joy in connecting with people and listening earnestly to their stories. A devoted learner, he immersed himself in books, news articles, podcasts, and radio programs, always eager to grasp new discoveries and global events. Sports and the outdoors also held a special place in his heart; he was an enthusiastic participant in tennis and skiing well into his later years. His love for travel took him across nearly every continent, including the stark, awe-inspiring expanses of Antarctica, reflecting a restless spirit eager to embrace the world’s beauty and diversity.

Among the most cherished memories shared by Donald’s family is the image of him dancing with his beloved wife, Poonie. Together, they explored folk dancing and even embraced the vibrant rhythms of disco, their steps a testament to shared joy and enduring companionship. Music was a lifelong companion to Donald; his home echoed with the tunes of big band eras and the melodies of Broadway and Billboard hits, enlivening the atmosphere with nostalgia and cheer.

Donald is survived by those dearest to him: his loving wife, Poonie; his son, Ken; and his grandsons, Marshall and Walter. Their lives were touched deeply by his presence, and they carry forward his legacy of kindness, curiosity, and integrity.

Throughout his life, Donald’s proudest accomplishments were not measured by accolades or honors but by the care he took to ensure that no one around him wanted for anything. In a world often marked by haste, he stood as a pillar of steady compassion and quiet strength, leaving a profound imprint on the hearts of family, friends, and colleagues alike.

Donald Cursoe’s life was a symphony of devotion, intellect, and humanity—a composition whose echoes will continue to inspire and guide all who had the privilege to know him. In remembering him, we celebrate a legacy defined not just by what he achieved, but by the grace with which he lived.
