Donald Lloyd Guthrie, 85, died of heart failure 24 October 2012 at Mt. Ogden Care Center. He was born 24 February 1927, in Eden, Utah the younger of two sons of Clarence Brenton and Jennie Elizabeth Clarke Guthrie. Brother DeWayne and both parents deceased. He attended Weber County schools and was a member of the LDS Church. He was a veteran of WWII enlisting in the U.S. Navy 10 March 1945. He was on the gunnery crew of the U.S.S. Mustin, in action from Adak, Alaska to Okinawa, where he drove a landing craft during the invasion. When his ship was hit by a torpedo bomber he transferred to the USS Tangier and witnessed the atomic bomb attack on Japan from offshore. Following munitions disposal duty in Japan and China, his ship sailed home through the Panama Canal to Norfolk, VA. and Philadelphia, PA. where it was decommissioned and he was honorably discharged 15 August 1946.He married Mary Evelyn Cox on 7 January 1950 in Evanston, WY. They resided in Washington Terrace, and later moved to Pleasant View. They are the parents of four daughters: Karol Lynn (David, deceased) Hughes, Donalee Jo (Dan, deceased) Tracy, Gail Marie (Greg) Long, LTC. AUS. Ret., deceased, and Jennifer Ellen (Michael) Earl. Their grandchildren are Amanda Hughes (Mike) Thomas, Brandon Hughes (deceased) Mathew Long, Michael Earl Jr. (deceased), Sarah Earl, Chase Earl and Kimberly Waite. They have seven great grandchildren. Don was a natural athlete and excelled at basketball, baseball, bowling and golf. He loved nature and was an avid hunter and fisherman. His trophy buck deer won the 1948 Kammayer Big Deer Contest. He was a member of the UGA, ABC, FOE and American Legion. He was employed for 38 years at DDOU, where he received many commendations and made many lifelong friends who met every Friday night at the Oclub Buddy Bar. Following retirement in 1983, he traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and toured several European Countries. His many hobbies included cake and cookie baking, leather tooling, rock cutting and collecting mini bottles and logo golf balls. He especially enjoyed being with his family and friends at his summer trailer at Bear Lake and lately enjoying the view from his front porch in Pleasant View. The family expresses their love and appreciation for the dear friends and neighbors who for many years have consistently provided companionship, support and assistance. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden. Family will meet with friends on Monday, October 29, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. and from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment with Military Honors will be held at Leavitts Aultorest Memorial Park.
