Dowell La Mar Smith October 10, 1927 ~ June 21, 2014 OGDEN - Dowell La Mar Smith, 86, passed away June 21, 2014 in Ogden, Utah. La Mar was born October 10, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to David McDowell Smith and Edna Mae Faulkner Smith McPhie. He was raised in Randolph, Utah. He graduated from Rich county High School where he was Student Body President. La Mar excelled in basketball. He attended Weber College and graduated from Coyne Electronics College in Chicago, Illinois. La Mar enlisted in the U S Army Air Force in November 1945, and served in WWII occupation forces in Tokyo, Japan. He married his beloved wife, Deon Juanita Creager July 16, 1948 in Evanston, Wyoming. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. La Mar was a faithful member of the LDS Church. He served as Cub Master, Scout Master, Ward Membership Clerk, Ward and Stake Magazine Representative. He was a German name Extraction Specialist and a devoted Home Teacher. He served three years the Ogden LDS Temple on a special assignment. He was a South Ogden and Weber Stake Dance Director and taught the last two All-Church dance festivals. La Mar was a director for the Weber-Morgan Regional Sesquicentennial Ball in 1976. He belonged to the Entre Nous and Varinne Dance Clubs. He was a Union Pacific Railroad Engineer and retired in 1992 with a safety record of 44 years. He belonged to the B.L.F. & E. and U.T.U. He was a Railroad Merit Badge Counselor for the Lake Bonneville Council Boy Scouts of America. La Mar enjoyed the great outdoors with his family; camping, boating, fishing, hiking, motorcycling, four-wheeling and hunting. He was an avid deer hunter and crack shot. La Mar fulfilled his big game hunting dream when he took a once in a life time Buffalo in 1991 and a once in a life time Moose in 1997. He was awarded the NRA LEGION OF HONOR in 2004 La Mar enjoyed traveling around the United States with his Good Sam Waffie group. He and his wife traveled all around the world, going to Israel twice and were there when Apostle la Grande Richards selected the site for the BYU campus. Later a tree was planted there in their name. La Mar is survived by his son L. Kent (Tonya) Smith; six grandchildren: Sheri (Brad) Basinger, Janie (Blake) Johnson, Cara Roth, Daren, Derek and James Smith, and four great-grandchildren: Taylor and Alexys Basinger, Bryce and Emily Roth. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Deon, and son D. Thayne.
