IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth
Carlin
April 30, 1943 – February 4, 2025
Elizabeth Nadine Wade Carlin, 81, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. She was born in Lima, Peru in 1943, the daughter of Martin Guyer Wade and Neva Courtney Husted. Her parents worked as teachers and doctors for the Methodist Church, primarily in South America. At the age of 14 months, her family moved to Iowa just as WWII was coming to an end. The family moved to Iquique, Chile in 1947. In 1948, they returned to Lima, Peru. In 1948, they relocated to La Paz, Bolivia. The family returned to Iowa in 1951 where her father worked for the phone company. Elizabeth contracted polio at age 8, which produced health consequences for the rest of her life. In 1956 they moved to Caracas, Venezuela. They left during the 1958 revolution to move to Vietnam, where her father continued working for the telephone company. The family's return to the U.S. included a world tour of India, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and other European countries. By the end of 1958, the family permanently settled in Maquoketa, Iowa. Elizabeth graduated from Maquoketa High School, where she met her future husband, Edward. The couple married June 17, 1961. She earned a bachelor's degree in music from the State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1963. Elizabeth developed a love for travel at an early age, which she shared with her family throughout her life.
The young couple moved to San Bernardino, California in 1964, where Elizabeth was a social worker. Ed was drafted and served as a mechanic in the Vietnam War. In 1967, the couple joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on April 3, 1969. In August 1971, they started their family by adopting their first child, Mark; he was two at the time. In March 1976, their daughter, Janet, was born. They moved to Utah shortly after, where they built their dream house in Riverdale. In February 1978, Emily was born. Edward unexpectedly died in a plane crash 20 days after their baby arrived. The rest of Elizabeth's life was devoted to raising her three children: Mark, Janet, and Emily.
Elizabeth was dedicated to helping children in both her career and volunteer time. Elizabeth was a full-time mother until her youngest was in kindergarten. She then earned her teaching license from Weber State College and moved to Blythe, CA for her first year of teaching in 1986. She spent most of her career as a special education teacher, helping children in Box Elder and Weber County, UT. She believed in the vast potential of each child. She earned her Masters of Education from the University of Phoenix in 1998. She retired from Ogden School District in 2011. In retirement, she continued to serve as a substitute teacher for Davis County.
Elizabeth was a Girl Scout leader for seven years, working with her daughters, who continued that legacy as adults. She later returned as a troop leader for her granddaughter for another two years.
For three decades, Elizabeth served on the Friends Board for the Weber-Morgan Children's Justice Center, a non-profit dedicated to helping child abuse victims. She contributed countless hours, working to raise money, organize events, and provide necessary resources. She was a fierce voice and was unrelenting in her dedication to the children of Weber and Morgan counties. In 2024, she was recognized by the state of Utah with a Hearts and Hands Award for her years of service.
She was also politically active and participated in city, county, and state party caucuses and conventions. She ran for state senate twice while her children were young. She volunteered for many campaigns, helping others get elected. She honored her civic duty by staying informed about changes and maintaining connections with many public servants.
Elizabeth was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served in several musical callings and was particularly dedicated to temple service and family history.
Elizabeth is survived by her sister Karleene Smith (Donald) and Elizabeth's direct descendants including her three children: Mark Edward Carlin (Shaun Adamson), Janet Rebecca Davis (Brandon), and Emily Ruth Marcus (Vincent); her grandchildren: Nathan Edd Carlin (Mars), Selica Lynn Arruda (Andre), Tyler Jay Carlin, Fiona Carlin, Seasons Espinoza (Kyle), Kalyn Marcus (Joshua Hafen) and Asher Marcus; and her great-grandchildren: Damian Staton, Gabrial Arruda, Lana Espinoza, Jamison Espinoza, Amber Espinoza, and Magnus Espinoza.
