Emery ‘Red’ Meckes's Obituary

Emery Meckes passed away December 3, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born August 31, 1923 in Bethlehem, PA son of Lena Bertie Shaver Love Meckes and Emery Meckes. His childhood and youth were spent in Muddlety Valley near Summersville, WV. He graduated from Nicholas County High School. He married Norma Jeanne Thomas October 23, 1950 in Ogden, UT. Together they had three children: Steve, Tom, and Chris. Their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden, UT temple March 31, 1977. Emery was an Elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the U. S. Marines Corps from August 1943 to December 1945 in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-313 (Lily Packin Hellbirds), a sister unit to Pappy Boyntons. After the war, he used his GI bill to earn a pilots license. He loved to fly and all things associated with aircraft. He enlisted in the Air Force Reserve. The 1906th AACS Squadron was activated during the Korean Conflict. He received training and worked as an Air Traffic Controller July 1951 to July 1953. Emery retired in 1979 from civil service at Hill AFB. He was an Air Traffic Control Specialist in the office where transient aircraft filed their flight plans, and met a variety of colorful and prominent people. At least one WWII Ace always asked Is Red around? when he came through Hill. Emery enjoyed golfing and earned several trophies. He had a lifelong love of learning, an active and inquisitive mind. He was friendly, cheerful, and engaging, loved to talk, and made friends easily everywhere he went. His greatest pleasure was his family. He took great interest and pride in his childrens and grandchildrens interests, activities and accomplishments, and spent long hours in telephone conversations with distant relatives. Emery is survived by sons Stephen Emery Meckes and Thomas Richard Meckes (Jodie); daughter Christine Meckes Cope (partner Richard Sorensen); six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother Gerald Wilson (Martha Jean) of Gaithersburg, MD. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jeanne; sisters Mary Love Wolff (Jack), Delphia Love; brothers Donald Love (Ilo), Henry Hank Love (Winnie), Earnest Ford Love (Lola). Friends may call on Tuesday, December 9 from 6 to 8 pm at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, UT. A graveside service will be held Thursday, December 11 at 2 pm, followed by interment at Leavitts Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th St., Ogden.
