Emmett W East I was born on a wintry day, ten minutes before midnight on the 19th of October 1917 in Warren, Utah. After a long courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis, I passed away on a warm sunny day, June 9th, 2011.I was the oldest of four children born to Alvin and Louise Wade East. My siblings are Dale East (deceased), Vernon East and Roma East Dominguez. I attended elementary school in Warren, Utah and middle school in Plain City, Utah. I graduated from Weber High School in 1935. I later attended the old Weber College and Utah State University. Growing up on a farm was difficult. Crops failed or there was no market for them. World War I left its heavy mark on the nation. That was followed by the great depression. Jobs were scarce. You took what you could get. I worked on farms, in canning factories, drove trucks and worked as an assistant building engineer at the Hotel Ben Lomond and became a railroad brakeman. On September 3, 1938, I married Leota (Jackie) Whitaker, who I loved very deeply. We had four wonderful children who survive me. My children are, Gary W. East (Sharon), Bonnie L. East Melendez (Armando), Vickie L. East Sharkey (Gerald), and Kathleen East Herrington. We were further blessed with eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. In March of 1988 and after great suffering, my wonderful wife, Jackie died from Lou Gehrigs disease (ALS).I later married Vila Hyde Roper and we subsequently divorced. Vila and her family and I remained good friends. In 1945, I was drafted in the Army Air Corps as an instrument repair specialist. After the war, I went to work for HAFB and retired after thirty two years. I held the position of Chief of Electrical and Hydraulic Quality Control Selection. As I leave, I want my family to know how great you have been in helping me though my illness! I am especially indebted to my youngest daughter Kathi for living with me and seeing to my every need. I also extend my thanks to the Alpine Hospice Team for all the aid and comfort they showered upon me and especially Robert Chandler my hospice nurse. I wish to have a private graveside service in the Warren Cemetery for family and friends on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the National ALS Society.
