Farr Leo Hurst's Obituary

Farr Leo Hurst August 22, 1924 - February 17, 2015 Farr Leo Hurst, age 90, passed very peacefully from this life Tuesday, February 17, 2015, as family members were gathered about his bedside. Farr was born August 22, 1924, in Ogden, Utah, a son of Leo Calvin Hurst and Deseret Ione Salt Hurst. Farrs education began at Lewis School in Ogden. Lewis School had grades kindergarten through tenth grade. From Lewis School, he attended and graduated from Ogden High School. He then continued his education at Weber College. Farr is a military veteran, serving in World War II as a member of the 509th Composite Group on the island of Tinian. The 509th was responsible for loading the Atomic Bomb on the Enola Gay aircraft. This mission was the contributing factor that brought the end of the war. Farr received an honorable discharge from the Army Air Corp/Air Force in 1946. Farr was a "Master Machinist" for the government, working at Hill Air Force Base and retiring from Defense Depot Ogden after 30 plus years. After his government retirement, Farr served as a school crossing guard under the direction of the Ogden City Police Department for ten years. During this chapter in his life he met and mentored many students of Lewis Elementary School. Farr has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life. He has served as a High Priest in the Orchard Park Ward where he was called to serve a stake/ward mission. Prior to the Orchard Park Ward he served in the Mutual and Sunday School Superintendency. He also had the opportunity to serve in the baptistery of the Ogden Temple. He attended the Temple weekly until his health would no longer permit him to do so. Farr married Ramona Daily in 1947. They were later divorced. He then courted Beth Marsh for several months. From day one Farr knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Beth and they were married on a beautiful winter day, December 1, 1971. Farr was truly a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother who daily demonstrated his unconditional love for his family daily. He taught by example, providing a positive role as a father and grandfather, but perhaps most importantly he was our friend. Farr enjoyed family get-togethers, where he would relate stories of his youth that always brought a smile or a hearty laugh from everyone. There are many fond memories of Farr that will be recalled often by family and friends. His sense of humor, wisdom, guidance and generous spirit will be missed! Farr is survived by his son, Bryan (Karen) Hurst and a daughter, Peggy Ann (Ron) Toya and daughter-in-law Susan Pisor; five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; brothers Dean and Jim (Joan) Hurst and sister, Bonnie Lee (Wes) Cox. A great-great grandson is due in March. Farr was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Beth Marsh Hurst, a son Phillip Allen Hurst and sister-in-law, Carol Hurst. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the caregivers on the rehab unit of the 2nd floor of the McKay hospital, with special thanks to Mary, the social worker. We would be amiss if we did not give a special thank you to a dear friend, Wilda Reynolds who accompanied Farr to the Temple every week. We also have appreciated the association and the love that has been expressed and demonstrated from Beths sons, Dave (Laurie) and Richard Marsh. And finally, the family extends a heartfelt thank you to the team from Encompass Health and Hospice that cared for Dad as his time to depart from this life became evident. In lieu of flowers, Farr would like donations made to the general missionary fund for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
