Gary Archie Plyer's Obituary

On March 20, 2016 we had to say goodbye to the most gentle, big hearted husband, father, grampy and brother, Gary Archie Plyer. He fought a valiant battle with lymphoma and was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. He was born on December 18, 1937, to Rex and Marion Plyer in Ogden, Utah. In 1961 he married Peggy Ann Wight in the Logan LDS Temple and they were blessed with five children. After graduating from Weber High School and Weber College with an associates degree, he then earned his Bachelors of Economics from the University of Utah. Gary was a gifted athlete and during his high school and college years he played football and competed in track and field, excelling in the discus and javelin. During this time he also served in the Utah National guard. As a member of the LDS Church he served two and a half years in the New Zealand South Mission. There, he developed a deep love for the Maori people and their culture "Kia Ora". He continued giving freely of his time in many church callings including bishop- teaching was always his favorite. While his boys were in high school, he was President of the Ogden High Booster Club, and for many years volunteered as a track and field coach. In 1988 he was awarded the Golden Apple Award from the Ogden City School District for his part in the procuring the lights for the Ogden and Ben Lomond High Schools football fields. After college Gary worked for his father-in-law at R.J. Wight Incorporated for 12 years, then in 1977 he began a 30 year career as a broker and financial consultant. In 1996 he co-founded Aspen Mills Bread Company of Utah with family members and helped build and grow it into a successful company; he was actively involved in the operations until his passing. Gary is survived by: his wife, Peggy; daughter, Jana Whiting (Jeff); sons, Burke (Gayle), Eric (Natasha), John (Monica); ten grandchildren; his brother, Brent (Kathy); his sister, Sandra Sharp (Clair), his brother and sister-in-law, DeVerl and Velda Wight.
