Obituary

On Friday, June 7, 2024, George Owen Higgs passed on to the arms of his sweetheart, Marion, after a long battle with several illnesses. He had been lovingly cared for by his youngest daughter, Michelle, for many years and the family wishes to acknowledge her and express deep gratitude for her selflessness in this endeavor.

George "Owen" Higgs was born February 23, 1931 to Thomas Higgs and Elsie Jones Higgs in Harrisville, Utah, the second of six children. Owen entered the labor force very early getting his first job around the age of 8 working for Hoot Gibson at his turkey ranch in Roy, a job he kept into his teens. A very hard worker, Owen was also known to play hard as well and the stories of his escapades with his brothers have entertained his family for generations. He had a special glint in his eye that told those around him that an amusing anecdote was about to be shared. Owen had a lifelong love of vehicles which he shared with his brothers. During slideshows at family reunions, they were quick to identify the vehicle in the picture but would struggle to identify the children or grandchildren. Indeed, in Owen's life history he marks the periods in his life by the vehicle he owned at the time.

In November 1952, he married Marion Tullis in the Salt Lake Temple and they built a family of seven children, Jeannette (Vane) Campbell, Owen Milo (Janice) Higgs, Kathy (Jeff) Carter, Jim Higgs, Rick (Anokha Ratnayake) Higgs, Cheryl White, and Michelle Higgs. Owen graduated from the University of Utah School of Pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist in several pharmacies over the years in Utah and California. For awhile he owned his own store, OK Pharmacy, with friend, Kyle DeNagel, with two stores, one on Washington Boulevard in Ogden and one in Kaysville. He was also a journeyman electrician in California and put this knowledge to use when the stores he worked at had electrical issues. He also was able to wire the home he built for his family in Uintah, Utah.

Owen was proud of his service to his country in the United States Army, which he joined when he was 18. He first served as a Private First Class in the Postal Unit in the 6th Army and was obligated to serve one night a week plus two weeks every summer for ten years. When he was 21 he was sent to Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana where he attended Adjutant General School and was trained to be a court reporter. During the Korean War he served his active duty stateside.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served in many positions throughout his life. His faith was very special to him and, in his later years, he cherished working in the Ogden temple with his wife. He was especially joyful when his temple work allowed him to be a part of seeing his children and grandchildren receive the blessings of temple ordinances.

Owen is survived by his children, 22 grandchildren, and 34 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Don (Orelene) Higgs and Evelyn (Bob) Elston. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and siblings Thomas (Violet) Higgs, Edward "Ted" (Karen) Higgs, and Joseph (Rosemary) Higgs.

The family would like to thank Dr. Glen Biddulph and his wonderful staff for providing such great care for their father over the years. As the end of life became apparent the nurses of Canyon Home Care and Hospice took very tender care of him and the family wishes to express gratitude to them for doing so.

Family will receive visitors at a viewing from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, June 14 and 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 15 at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th St., Ogden UT. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm.
