Gerald Edson Barker died peacefully in Ogden on June 6, 2011, one month before he would have been 102. He is survived by his three children Reese Barker and his wife Janet of North Ogden, Utah, Geraldine Winterbottom of Clinton, Utah, and Catherine Mapes and her husband Calvin of Antelope, California. He is also survived by a brother Wess Barker and a sister Betty Glassnapp, both of Auburn, California. His family includes eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Gerald was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Jacobsen. He was born on July 7, 1909 on the island Paauhau in Hawaii, while his father was on a bookkeeping assignment with the Spreckels Sugar Company. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay area in California. He worked for a short time in a lumber mill. He learned the trade of machinist and welder while working for Spreckels Sugar Co. He also played the drums in bands in the Salinas area. He moved to Ogden and met his wife, Mary Louise Howell, and married July 1, 1943. She died in 1988. They raised three children. During this time he operated his own business, The Highway Machine Works, in Roy for 25 years. He was active in the Roy Lions Club, the Amateur Radio Association, and helped the Jaycees with many of their events with his audio services. He also played the drums after retiring for senior dance events. Over a hundred family members, neighbors and friends attended a celebration of his life for his 100th birthday in 2009. The family expresses appreciation to Geralds daughter, Geraldine for the loving care of her father, and to Dr. Robert Mohr and the Wasatch Care Center for their kindness. Gerald has requested that there are no services and will be cremated. A private family celebration will be held at a later date. Cremation under the direction of Leavitts Mortuary.
