Obituary

Geraldine Smith Belnap, 83, passed peacefully from this life at home on Monday, September 12, 2011, completing her fight against pancreatic cancer with the same grace, dignity, and class she displayed throughout her life.Geri was born on January 24, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Franklin Roberts Smith and Iona Purnell Heiner. She attended Whittier Elementary School in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School in Denver, Colorado in 1946. While attending the University of Utah she met and fell in love with a young, handsome medical student, N. Blaine Belnap. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on August 18, 1955 (divorced 1999). They spent their early marriage in Salt Lake City, UT, and California but settled in Ogden where together they raised two children, Scott and Susan. They later built a home in Eden, UT. Geri was the epitome of grace and class. She had many dear friends and loved to socialize. She loved to attend the theater. There probably is not a Broadway play she has not seen. She attended and hosted many luncheons, dinner parties, and game nights, always with a touch of elegance included in the simplest of gatherings but never before her floors were vacuumed, her hair was done, and her earrings were in. Geri was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed many callings over the years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the Delta Delta Delta Sorority-Theta Phi Chapter, University of Utah. She is survived by her children, Dr. C. Scott (Christina) Belnap, Kailua, HI, and Susan (Bruce) Bunnell, Ogden, UT; 7 grandchildren, CarriAnn Bunnell, Brittany (Tom)Driscoll, Eric (Katie) Bunnell, Jeffrey Bunnell, Kayla Bunnell, Malia Belnap, Maile Belnap, and one great grandson, Samuel Bunnell. Geri was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Franklin Heiner Smith. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to Moms dear friends, neighbors, and Relief Society for their countless hours of service to her during her final weeks. Also, there are no words to adequately express our gratitude to Moms nephew, Frank, and his wife Cheryl for their charity, selflessness, and love during Moms final days. She cherished them and it was fitting that as she took her last breath in this life, they were by her side.Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, UT.
