It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Gordon Keith Harrington after a long illness. Gordon was born on April 4th, 1929, in Yakima, WA. His mother, who lived to 102, was an elementary school math teacher. Gordons father, who was a train conductor, died when Gordon was only thirteen years old. During the Korean War, Gordon served as a cryptologist in Army Intelligence. He is a graduate of Washington State University. He later pursued his Ph.D. in International Relations at the University of Chicago. While at Chicago, he met his wife, Mary Polly Paulson Harrington, who also studied there. In 1969, Dr. Harrington was offered a teaching position in the History Department at Weber State University. He was well known as a master teacher and administrator who followed the highest standards of honesty and integrity in his interactions with teachers and colleagues. He published numerous articles in peer-reviewed publications, most of which focused on East Asian politics and foreign policy. Gordon was active in professional organizations and served as a long-time editor of the Journal of the Western Association of Asian Studies. He was also active in numerous community organizations. He wrote a book chronicling the history of his long-time church, the Ogden United Church of Christ (Congregational). Gordon and Polly had two children, Charles and Jonathan. Gordon and the family traveled widely including month-long stints in Singapore, India and the United Kingdom. Charles was known for his friendly demeanor, amazing memory, and loving heart. Jonathan followed in his fathers footsteps into academia. Gordon was preceded in death by his son, Charles, in 2015. His wife passed away in July 2017. He is survived by his son, Jonathan, and Granddaughter, Kela. Anyone who is interested is invited to attend a memorial service at the United Church of Christ at 3350 Harrison Blvd in Ogden on Sunday, January 7th at 1:00 PM.
