Obituary

Helen Corn Makapugay, a beacon of love and generosity, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, in Ogden, Utah. Born on March 19, 1930, in Manila, Philippines, Helen's life journey was marked by her selfless nature and the joy she brought to those around her. She was a devoted wife to the late Cesar Vicente T. Makapugay, a loving mother, an adored grandmother, and a cherished great-grandmother.

Helen's early years were spent in the vibrant city of Manila, where she attended St. Paul's College and earned her Associate of Arts degree. Her education laid the groundwork for the many roles she would embrace throughout her life. Though she chose to dedicate her life to her family as a homemaker, Helen's presence was felt far beyond the walls of her own home. She was a pillar in her community, a friend to many, and an active participant in her Christian faith.

Surviving Helen are her brother, Alfred Charles Kwok Chiu Chan; daughters, Maria Rebecca Oliveira and Helena Makapugay; sons, Charles C. Makapugay, Cesar Makapugay Jr., and Frederick Makapugay; daughters-in-law, Victoria Figueroa, Christina Schierman; and her beloved grandchildren, Carlo, Alix, Nikki, Nuno, Michael, and Marcus.

Her legacy continues to shine through her great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Sebastian, Elliot, and Margo and Cesar. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Cesar, her son, George C. Makapugay, and her grandson, Micah M. McDonald. The absence of these cherished family members only deepened Helen's capacity for love and her commitment to her surviving relatives.

Helen's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. She had an unquenchable thirst for travel, exploring new places, and embracing different cultures. Her love for theatre and movies was only matched by her joy in dancing, an activity that reflected her zest for life. A wonderful cook, Helen found the most joy in entertaining friends and family, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that will be fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to experience it.

Those who knew Helen would describe her as loving, generous, and selfless. Her actions and kindness truly embodied the words of Mother Teresa, "It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving." Helen's life was a testament to this belief, as she poured love into every act of kindness, every meal shared, and every dance enjoyed.

Helen's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit remains a guiding light. Her life was a testament to the beauty of giving, the strength of faith, and the joy of family. As we bid farewell to Helen Corn Makapugay, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a legacy of love that will continue to inspire generations to come.
