J. Lee Bybee, 83, passed away on January 24, 2015 at home surrounded by his family. He was born July 18, 1931 to Byron Lee and Catherine (Stagg) Bybee in Ogden, Utah. He graduated from Weber High School, went to Weber State College and played football there for two years. He then transferred to Utah State and got his Masters Degree and Specialists Degree. He married his high school sweetheart, Erma Irene Hill, on August 6, 1953 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. After he and Erma were married, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps for 2 years; another 18 years in the Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He was a teacher, coach, assistant principal and retired from Ogden City School District as the principal of Ogden High School. He loved coaching the Jr. High and High School teams and made many life-long friends of the boys he coached. He and his wife enjoyed many wonderful years, wintering in Yuma, AZ - they loved it there and made many great and dear friends. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; having served as a Counselor in the Sunday School Presidency in his ward; taught the Teacher Development Class and was a faithful and long-time Home Teacher. The Church used to have organized teams in softball and basketball and the teams he played on had many tournament titles - he loved competitive sports! He played college football; loved hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He was an avid reader his whole life and had enough books to open his own library! In his later years he learned and enjoyed wood carving. He and Erma were always there attending kids, grandkids and great-grandkids in any event they were participating in. He was known as "Poppy" by all his family and will be greatly missed; he could always make us laugh with his great sense of humor and made each one of us feel loved and special! He is survived by his wife of 61 years and his six children; Terri (Robert) Phillips, Malad City, ID; Julie (Scott) Harris of Idaho Falls, ID; Scott Bybee, Uintah; Jan (Dennis) LaMar, West Haven; Jill (Troy) Fulmer, West Point; and Dale Bybee, Uintah. He has 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and ( two more on the way). He is survived by one brother Clark (Connie) Bybee. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Pat Bybee. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Uintah Ward LDS Building, 6350 S. Combe Rd. in Uintah, with a viewing from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. There will also be a viewing Friday, January 30, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 - 36th St., Ogden, UT. Interment will be at the Uintah City Cemetery, where military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps and the V.F.W. will be accorded. The family wishes to express their thanks for the devoted and loving care shown by Dr. Gray, nurses and staff at the Hematology Clinic - you made him feel so special! Words cannot express our appreciation for the compassion and care given to our dad during his last days when he was able to come home and be cared for by the nursing staff at the Intermountain Home & Hospice - with their help, we were able to spend time with him and make his last days comfortable and peaceful; thank you again!
