Jacob (Jake) Kapp, also known as Grandpa to all those who knew and loved him, passed away peacefully and under his own terms on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home at the age of 91. Jake was born on February 15, 1923 in Ogden to Harm and Renske Kap. He was raised in South Weber with six brothers and two sisters and attended Davis County Schools including Davis High School. On April 14, 1943 he began active duty in the Army, serving in the Pacific Conflict and was discharged on January 24, 1946. He was proud of his service to his country. He was a Sergeant in the Military Police and proud to have been in the lead military jeep that escorted General Douglas McArthur during his second return to Manila. After being sent to Sendai, Japan, his ship was alongside the U.S.S. Missouri as the Armistice Treaty was signed and he was able to witness this historic event. After the war he served an LDS Mission in the Netherlands, his parents homeland, from 1947 to 1949. After being home a short time, Jake met the love of his life and his eternal companion, Klea Mower, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 24, 1950. Klea preceded him in death on August 30, 2012. She is sorely missed and we are at peace to know that they are together again. They were members of the West Weber 2nd Ward. Jake retired from Hill Air Force Base as a Supervisor. He and his son also did Farm Custom Slaughtering for 25 years as a second hobby. In 1980, he and his son, Gary, founded Kapp Construction & Development in Ogden and for many years he continued to drive dump trucks and operate heavy equipment. After his retirement From Kapp Construction, he still stayed involved with the employees because he loved to stop by the shops and visit, joking and kidding with everyone. They all knew and loved him as Grandpa. Grandpa loved his family and his Heavenly Father dearly and would do anything for anyone. He also enjoyed the many animals he cared for over the years on his farm in West Weber, especially his long- horn cattle. He had many great stories he shared about all his experiences in life. His favorite vacation spots were Yellowstone Park and Branson, MI. He loved hunting with family and friends. Nobody could out shoot him or out hike him. He especially loved checking traps with his good friend, Carl Bullock. His best times with Klea were going on long rides and going to the Weber County Fairgrounds to watch all the horse activities. Everyone there knew him. Jake loved his quarter horses and loved to watch them run. He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Cecil, Marvin and Leon and one great-grandson, Tyler Scott Oborne. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Lee (Martin) Bender (West Weber), and his son, Gary (Penny) Kapp (West Point), 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Tiny Robb and Berneil Voss, and two brothers, Heber (Ardeth) Kapp and LeRoy (Colleen) Kapp. The family wishes to thank Dr. Justin Mansfield, Dr. Jerry John, Dr. Mark Woolley and the caregivers and therapists at Manor Care and the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home for their very special and loving care. Also special thanks to his home teachers who gave him blessings and love, Bishop Doug Stephens and Nick Jones. We will miss you, Grandpa, but we know you are dancing with Grandma and the Angels. A Celebration of Jakes Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the West Weber 2nd Ward, 900 South 4100 West. Family and friends may visit at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th St. Ogden, UT, from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday 9:30-10:30 prior to the services at the ward. Interment at West Weber Cemetery. Services under the direction of Leavitts Mortuary.
