James E. Patterson, age 85, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018, in Ogden, UT. Jim was born September 24, 1932, in Marietta, OH to Bernard F. & Wilda Anne Patterson. After graduating from Marietta High School in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Upon completion of basic training, he was assigned to Russian Language School in Syracuse, NY. He was then assigned to a base in Anchorage and subsequently Adak Island where he served during the Korean War as a Russian language interpreter.
His tour of duty was completed in Colorado Springs, CO, where he met his bride to be, Suzy, at a wedding at the Broadmoor Hotel. They were married in Trinidad, CO on September 9, 1956. For two years they made their home in Boulder, CO where Jim completed his education at the University of Colorado with a Bachelors degree in Geology. After working for two years for Pan-American Petroleum in Wyoming, Jim decided he wanted to be self-employed. With all of their possessions in a one-wheeled trailer, Jim and Suzy moved to Utah to start their own business. They opened their first dry cleaning store in Roy, UT in 1961 and built Your Valet Fine Dry Cleaning to 10 stores with over 100 employees over a period of 53 years.
Jims involvement in civic activities began with serving as the President of the Roy Chamber of Commerce. Later, he was involved in the Ogden Chamber of Commerce as Chair of the Military Affairs Committee. He was the first civilian to be sent to the USAF War College. Jim became involved in the National Dry Cleaning Trade Association and served as District Director for four years and then served as President. Because of his involvement with the industry, Jim and Suzy traveled extensively throughout the US and worldwide.
Jim served on the Board of Directors of Youth Impact for 17 years and participated on many committees. He was also a member of the Ogden Exchange Club and served as President and in many other capacities. Jim enjoyed golfing and engaging in the antics and travels of the R & W Club.
Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years, Suzy; his daughter Alice and son-in-law Gary Moe; and granddaughter GraceAnne of Park City, UT. He was preceded in death by his brother Bruce Patterson and son Brent Patterson.
A viewing will be held at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th St., Ogden on Friday, January 12, 6:00 8:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at Leavitts Mortuary, Saturday, January 13, at 2:00 pm. Family will greet friends prior to the Services from 1:00 1:45 pm.
Interment at Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd, South Ogden followed by a return to Leavitts for a final reception in the Waterfall Room.
