IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Janet E.
Thompson
March 23, 1941 – November 6, 2024
Janet Ellen Mencimer Thompson, 83, passed away on November 6, 2024, from complications related to age. Janet was born on March 23, 1941, to Dr. Floyd R. Mencimer and Catherine Longmore Mencimer in Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1958, studied for two years at Colorado State University, and graduated from Utah State with a degree in Child Development & Elementary Education in 1962.
Janet married Harold Thompson in 1965, and they had three children. They were later divorced.
Janet retired in 2004 after 16 years of government service at Hill Air Force Base and the IRS.
She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and served as Honored Queen of Job's Daughters in 1957. Throughout her youth, she was an All-American trap shooter, and she and her dad took home the trophy in the father-daughter golf tournament at the Ogden Country Club. Throughout the '70s and '80s, Janet was an avid tennis player, winning many tournaments and competing with her daughter (Barb) in the Mother-Daughter Family Equitable Tournament at the U.S. Open in 1980.
Janet's cheerful personality and sense of humor remained with her until the end. Her laugh was contagious, and she took pride in the successes of her children and grandchildren. Because she was a kid at heart, kids were drawn to her and she loved sharing in the fun. She was especially good with babies and young children. Even her sense of charity extended to the young as she organized yard sales and sold Christmas cards to combat juvenile diabetes as well as annually making and donating fleece blankets to Shriner's Hospitals for Children.
Janet's motto was "Live. Laugh. Love!" She instilled confidence in her family, stressed the importance of believing in ourselves, and loved us as we are. From her, we learned to celebrate the moment (and to celebrate birthdays all month long!), and we will dearly miss her joyful personality, sparkling green eyes, and uplifting spirit. She was truly our beautiful soul.
Janet was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her siblings: Barbara Maxfield (Greeley, CO) and E.G. "Skip" Mencimer (Salt Lake City, UT); children: Michael (Eileen), Barbara (Scott), and Elizabeth; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Parker, James, Landon, Hannah, Ryan, Josh; great-granddaughter Mina Mae; and her best friend Myrna LaPee.
The family would like to thank the angels at Apple Village and Symbii Hospice for making Janet's final hours as comfortable as possible.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Janet's honor at a later date, and her ashes will be scattered "out west where the ducks and pheasants fly." In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
