John L. Klein was born August 15, 1942 to Loren and Leona (Garvin) Skogness in Crookston, Minnesota. After divorcing Loren, Leona moved with her children to Devils Lake, North Dakota where she met Virgil Klein. Leona and Virgil were married in May, 1947 and Virgil proceeded to formally adopt John and his sister Kathy.
John graduated as Valedictorian of his high school graduating class in 1960. He also won the John Philip Sousa Award for best senior musician. When the Peace Gardens started a music camp, John was in the first class and also in the first European band tour they sponsored. John went on to further his music by entering the University of North Dakota music program and there he met Barbara Bry, whom he married in Manvel, ND in January, 1963.
While finishing college and getting his masters in music, he also taught music in Michigan, ND. John and Barb were divorced in 1976. John later met Luella Buxton whom he married in May, 1982, in Clearfield, Utah. John and Luella were later divorced.
John was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, George and Augusta Klein; Maternal Grandparents, John and Martha Garvin; his parents, Loren Skogness, Leona Klein and Virgil Klein and a grandson Nicholas J. Massengale.
He is survived by his sisters; Kathy Everaert of Monroe, Washington, Vivian (Larry) Bahls of Panama Beach, FL, Virginia Klein of Fargo, ND and Valerie (Larry) Hakanson of New Rockford, ND; his children; Martha Klein of Elkmont, Alabama, David (Sonia) Klein of Baggs, Wyoming, Amy (Buttle) Klein of Saratoga, Wyoming, Sabrina (Rob) Tracy of Montrose, Colorado, April Buxton of Clearfield, Utah and Travis (Beckey) Buxton of Veazie, Maine; his grandchildren; Darby and Jessie Klein, JD Buttle, Spencer Massengale, Ashley Norman and Desiree Funke, Madison, Brooklyn, Halle and Mason Buxton; his nieces and nephews; Tammy Klein and Tim Klein, Vicki Peterson, Lawrence Bahls and Lori Bahls, Kim Beckman and Dawn Lindenberg, Heidi Huesties and Michael Hakanson.
There will be a Wake for John L. Klein on Saturday, July 11, 2015 from 2:00 until 5:00 pm at the Circle Inn, 2253 N. Main Street, Sunset, Utah.
