John Jack Lucas's Obituary

John James Lucas, 92, passed away October 10, 2016 at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home. Jack was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 9, 1924 to Elza and Marie James Lucas, the third of four sons. When he was six years old, the family moved to Ogden, Utah where his father managed a lumber store. Young Jack straightened 24s in the shed beginning a 70 year career in the lumber business. He also helped develop Powder Mountain Ski Resort and served on its Board of Directors. Jack attended Polk Elementary, Mound Fort Junior High and in 1942 graduated from Ogden High, where he was president of the Stagecraft Guild. He served in the army during World War II, on the South Pacific Island of Morotai, experiencing 87 air raids in just a few months. On January 28, 1947, Jack married Elna Cobabe of Slaterville in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They are the parents of two daughters, Lynette (Joe) Deru, Marriott-Slaterville, and Sheila (Bill) Armstrong, Cottonwood Heights. Jack enjoyed ten wonderful grandchildren and 17 super great-grandchildren. His service in the LDS Church included ward clerk, stake finance clerk, stake mission president, high councilor, counselor to two bishops, and bishop of the Slaterville Second Ward. For 12 years he served as a host at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. Jack loved to travel. He far exceeded his goal to visit 100 countries, traveling to 50 states, 173 countries and every continent. He visited Lake Powell more than 70 times with family and friends. He volunteered at Antelope Island State Park, and for 10 years played the governor of Arizona in re-enactments at Golden Spike National Historic Site. He called square dancing and enjoyed coin collecting, magic squares, and Sudoku. Jack is survived by his wife, daughters and brother, Frank Lucas. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Bill and Tom Lucas. The service of his many care givers is greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Primary Childrens Medical Center. A Viewing will be on Friday, October 14, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Leavitts Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11:00 am at Leavitts Mortuary. Friends may visit with the family prior to services from 9:45 to 10:45 am.
