John Richard Nelson, age 73, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2024, in Ogden, Utah, just a few days shy of his 74th birthday. Born on August 15, 1950, in Scobey, Montana, to Flossie and Richard Nelson, John lived a life rich in experience, humor, and service.

John is survived by his beloved mother, Flossie; his son, Eugene De Guzman, and Eugene's partner, Alyssa McEwan; and his two cherished granddaughters, Kailani (3) and Kinslee (1) De Guzman. John also leaves behind his brothers Joe (Carolyn) and Richard (Cindy), and his sisters Julie (Stan) French, Jennifer Nelson, Jocelyn Nelson (Joe Watmuff), and Jane Nelson. His many nieces and nephews adored his quirky jokes and always looked forward to time spent with him. John was preceded in death by his father, Richard, and his older brother, Jim, who passed away just last year.

As a 1968 graduate of Scobey High School, John played American Legion baseball, where he earned the nickname 'Wildhorse Nelson'—a nod to his fearless bareback riding in local rodeos. But his daring spirit didn't stop there. After briefly attending the College of Great Falls and the University of Montana, John enlisted in the Navy at the height of the Vietnam War. His pride in serving his country was a defining trait throughout his life.

After his honorable discharge, John made his home in Oak Harbor, WA, where he embraced his many passions. He had a deep love for music, dabbled in amateur hydroplane racing, and enjoyed boating. His talents also shone in the local community theater, where he brought passion and energy to every performance, showcasing his vibrant personality and musical gifts. While living in Oak Harbor, John also earned his Associate's Degree from Skagit Community College."

John began his Oak Harbor career in the U.S. Commissary system, starting as a meat cutter and steadily rising to the position of Store Director. His dedication and expertise led to international assignments, including roles as Assistant Store Director at U.S. Commissaries in Okinawa, Japan; Chievres, Belgium; and Ramstein, Germany. He later became Store Director at Lajes Field Air Force Base in the Azores before returning to his beloved Montana as Store Director at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls. In May 2012, under John's leadership, the Malmstrom commissary was recognized as 'The Best Large Commissary in the United States.'"

Even with his many accomplishments, John would tell you that the true pride of his life was his son, Eugene. With Eugene, John's life was a rich tapestry of family, service, and community. His legacy will be cherished by all who knew him, especially his family, who will forever hold dear his love, laughter, and the countless memories they shared. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
